Let’s hear it for ourselves

By Roslyn Ryan

There was at least something for both sides last week, as the election season that had seemed to go on forever finally came to an end.

If you were pulling for Obama, it was certainly a day you will never forget. And for those who had forgotten what dignity in the face of defeat looked like, John McCain gave an example for the ages.

In a moment that had to be extraordinarily difficult, when the entire world was watching, the man who had been labeled something of a hothead showed more grace than perhaps many of us have seen.

Personally — and I had started to feel like I was in the minority on this by the end of the campaign — I found pretty compelling reasons to like both candidates.

Maybe the…

Obama’s win can be counted as a victory for all of us

By Ross Mackenzie

What does not destroy me makes me stronger.
— Nietzsche

And so it is to be President Barack Obama.

His seminal victory marks a major moment in the nation’s history. It is fundamentally his accomplishment — for minorities and multi-ethnics, for the meek and humble, for the nation. He merits the highest commendation and praise. Only in the continuing experiment that is America, the great good land, could his victory in such proportion have been even imagined let alone achieved.

A stream of election-related observations . . .

Many factors contributed to Obama’s win: Iraq, President Bush’s unpopularity (though at a favorable level well above the pitiful 9 percent of the…

Registrar: County stayed red

By Roslyn Ryan
Editor

If Powhatan County poll workers were expecting an onslaught of voters at the polls Nov. 4, they probably weren’t disappointed.

Over 14,000 residents braved soggy weather conditions to cast their ballots.

Poe said she thought Powhatan’s success handling the crowds mirrored the lack of trouble across the state.

Despite pre-Election Day predictions that poll workers would be overrun and chaos would ensue, Poe said the few small glitches they faced were “nothing we couldn’t handle.”

“I think things went exceptionally well,” she said. “I’ve heard nothing but good things from residents about the job our poll workers did.”

Despite the fact that the Commonwealth…

Some residents report trouble with voting machines

Michael Copley

Concerns have surfaced regarding electronic voting methods in the county and across the state. Robin St. John says she and another county voter were unable to cast their votes for President this morning at the Fine Creek Fire Department polling station.

“I cast my vote for the Senate and the machine went on to the next screen,” said St. John. “Then the machine shut down-I never got to vote for president.”
Inez Poe of the County Registrar’s Office said she understands people’s frustrations over submitting incomplete ballots but said all ballots are presented on the same screen.

“Some people are not seeing the choices, they’re just over looking them,” she said. “It’s…

Up in the air? Youth and undecided head to the polls

Michael Copley

I’d be surprised to hear of undecided voters at this stage in the game. We have been saturated with political rhetoric for the past few months, but how much of an impact do campaign ads have and what is really driving the choices voters make?

The youth vote was expected to play in Sen. Obama’s favor, but listening to a PHS student volunteer talk outside of a fairly vacant District 1 polling station at 10:45 this morning, expectations seem less certain.

“I think it’s important for us to get out and support McCain,” said the young Republican volunteer. He said he expected a majority of the county’s youth to vote Republican, “But a lot of people [my age] aren’t looking at the serious…

Voters come out, despite the weather

Michael Copley

Rain and cold hasn’t kept voters away from the polls today but the mood relayed by polling station volunteers is mixed.

Inclement weather has traditionally played in the Republicans’ favor, but fervor surrounding this election seems to have changed today’s landscape.
The parking lot at St. John Neumann Catholic Church was, according to volunteers, full at six o’clock this morning and the line ran out the door.

“A lot of people are coming out,” said Duke Brown, a McCain volunteer at the church, “They’re scared this is going to go the wrong way.”

But the volunteers who stood with Sen. John Watkins at the Huguenot Fire Department painted a slightly different…

Election signs coming down

Roslyn Ryan

Powhatan Today received a call from a county resident this morning who was concerned about VDOT removing signs from the medians on Route 60 before the election is over.
A source from VDOT has told us that crews will in fact be removing the signs, and that those signs were technically not supposed to be there in the first place.

While it’s commonly understood that VDOT will remove any sign that presents a traffic hazard, our source told us that it is actually illegal to place any signs in the VDOT right of way.

For all of those who will be taking down their own signs in the days to come, there is an eco-friendly option this year. A clearly marked receptacle will be located behind Frisby’s restaurant from Nov.…

Another spin on getting info ‘on line…’

Roslyn Ryan

Here is how at least one reporter took the pulse of the county…via the phone at the dry cleaners.
I called the cleaners around 10 a.m. to make sure that they had not sent my husband’s suits to the charity shop (as they warned me they would do if I did not pick them up) and the very nice lady that answered said ‘Can you hold on? I have a customer.’ She then got into a conversation with a man picking up his clothes, concerning the election and just how much they would like all this to be over.

According to this man, the polling place he went to had been a little crazy but manageable.

I could only hear this, mind you, but I suppose it is the closest a reporter could be to being the proverbial fly…

Things slowing down at the polls…for now

Roslyn Ryan

There was no shortage of polling place reports this morning, as the county was abuzz with people sharing news of traffic snares and long lines. The crowds in most places seemed to have dissipated quickly however, and all the people we’ve talked to that voted after 8:30 a.m. have reported little to no wait.

Powhatan residents Duke and Pat Brown, who spent the morning trying to keep dry under a tent at St. John Neumann, a District 1 polling location, said the line had been “out the door” when they first showed up at 6 a.m. By 9:30 however, there were only a few cars left in the parking lot.

The Browns were handing out sample ballots to voters as they hustled past, in the hopes, Pat said, that those who had never…

Rain and relief on Election Day

Michael Copley

Election Day has brought rain and a definite sense of relief to the county. But between late game campaign advertisements and a tiring media onslaught, the excitement seems to be over the end of the campaigns and not the prospect of a new president. People are just glad that it’s over.

Whatever the outcome, “It’s not going to be easy on me,” said Ann Reynolds whose daughter and husband sit fervently in opposite camps. She said the upcoming holiday season could be tense.

But the real question is how long it will take, after the votes are counted, for our factionalized government to come together for the sake of the country.

One more reason to be heard on Nov. 4

By Roslyn Ryan
Editor

If you’re around my age or older, you’ve probably seen the teen-angst classic The Breakfast Club, and recall the scene in which the always-in-trouble-high-school kid asks the squeaky-clean-straight-A kid why on Earth he has a fake ID in his wallet.

“Duh,” says Straight A. “It’s so I can vote.”

The scene is funny, but the reason it’s funny is somewhat sad: of all the things young people get jazzed about, reaching voting age has not traditionally been one of them.

That’s why it’s been so heartening to see the surge in young people registering to vote in recent months. There’s always been at least a small group of young people who were educated about the…

A Q&A with with Fourth Congressional District Candidate Congressman Randy Forbes - R

What is the most significant difference between you and your opponent?

Forbes

My highest priority as your Representative for the last seven years has been to protect and defend the United States of America. As Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee, I’ve been committed to ensuring our military is the best-trained, best-equipped, and most capable in the world.  I’ve visited our troops in combat – even spending Christmas with them – and I know first-hand how important…

A Q&A with with Fourth Congressional District Candidate Andrea Miller - D

What is the most significant difference between you and your opponent?

Miller

I represent change and Mr. Forbes represents a continuation of the Bush failed economic policies. I support the Constitution including the notion of separation of church and state. I will work to represent all citizens of the 4th District and not just those in Hampton Roads. My opponent opposes regulation of the financial industry, wants to privatize social security, opposes homegrown biofuels and has voted against every alternative energy…

County voter numbers continue to climb

By Richard Carrier
Contributing writer

The interest in the 2008 General Election has manifested itself in a record number of potential voters registering. The Commonwealth of Virginia’s new bench mark is a record 5,021,993 registrations, a 436,155 or 9.68 percent increase in just the past ten months.

Of the 400 thousand plus new registrations, just under 40 percent are under the age of 25, with under 25-year-old females representing the highest percentage at 21.09. Accurate age/gender analysis is not available prior to this year, according to State Board of Elections representative Ryan Enright, but the current data puts female registrants at the top of all six statistical categories; under 25 years of age, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64 and over 65 years of age. All…

McCain, Palin a winning team

By Ross Mackenzie
Media General News Service

What’d you think about the debate?

McCain-Obama II?

Actually, that one and Palin-Biden. Both.

Let’s start with Palin-Biden. She had him for lunch — blew him away. It wasn’t even close.

But he was so smooth, uptown, on top of his facts. She was so — you know — provincial, down-home, just-folks.

Exactly — you make my point. Despite the press fencing him as a “lunch-bucket Democrat,” he came across less as “smooth” than as too slick by half. Along the way he has fuzzed his bio facts, saying he had been shot at in Baghdad — as Hillary did when she claimed she and Chelsea had been targets on the tarmac in Tuzla. He also has said FDR…

Are you an informed voter?

By Elizabeth Farina
Media General News Service

It’s less than 20 days before a General Election that has been in campaign mode for over two years. From the primary race, and now down to the wire, candidates are firing back and forth between camps. Luckily, it’s only a war of words.

This isn’t the first time the United States has seen an election that highlights divisions of ideology and principles, and it isn’t the first time questionable character has been a consideration in casting a ballot.

The United States has seen a number of heated elections in its mighty history. There is one in particular that revealed the weakness of the U.S. Constitution. Bitter partisanship roared through Congress with heated debates for the highest elected office in…

In VP debate, Palin was winner

A. Granado, Media General News Service

The one and only vice presidential debate is over, and while some in the media have called it for Joseph Biden, and others for Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate is the winner.

We don’t say this because she outthought, out talked or out argued her opponent but because she held her own in an event that some critics were saying would be the final nail in the coffin of her credibility.

Palin has not submitted to much direct scrutiny from the press since McCain announced her as his running mate. She has sat down for a small number of interviews and her performance has been underwhelming.

Often, during her previous interviews, she had seem flustered, unprepared and, well, inexperienced.

So,…

Voter turnout expected to soar

By Richard Carrier
Contributing writer

The 2008 presidential election in Powhatan could easily have the highest voter turnout in the county’s history. The diversity in the choice of candidates is the reason, according to Inez L. Poe, Powhatan County Registrar.

“Choices in race and gender mean that we have never seen a Presidential election like this,” she said. “Not ever, not never.” And Poe should know. She has served as the county’s Registrar since 1972, overseeing the voting process through 10 Presidential elections.

Statistics are already beginning to add credence to the Registrar’s prediction. A record 17,067 active registered voters in Powhatan County marks a 12.5 percent increase over the 14, 928 voters who registered…
