4-H News (week of 6/25/08)

Jun 25, 2008

The Powhatan 4-H Shooting Club continued its tradition of bringing top honors home during the recent 2008 Virginia Hunter Education Championships.

Approximately 150 young shooters from all over Virginia converged at the Holiday Lake 4-H Center in Appomattox, VA to participate during the weekend of May 2-4. The junior team captured second place in the outdoor skills event, second in archery, third in shotgun and first in rifle. The senior team placed first in outdoor skills, first in archery, first in shotgun and second in rifle. Junior level competitors are between the ages of 9 and 13, while seniors are 14 to 19.

Both the junior and senior teams took first place in the hunter responsibility test which involves as many as 100 questions. Powhatan team member Dalton Kropp earned the second place trophy for an individual overall in the senior division. Last year he took first place overall and two years ago, he was overall junior champ. Anthony Schaapman earned the second place trophy as individual overall in the junior division. Other first place individual awards went to Gavin Rowe for senior archery and Joshua Woodruff for junior rifle. Travis Wagner and Woodruff took the senior and junior hunter responsibility test awards.

The 4-H club practices several times a month between February and September. The next big event for this team is the State 4-H Shoot in September, but the team will also compete over the summer at smaller events.
