$77 million typo elicits concern from board members Published: January 13, 2012 By Roslyn Ryan For Powhatan’s newly elected board of supervisors, one small typographical error has added up to a lot of confusion—and about three-quarters of a million dollars. During a special workshop last night, board members turned their attention to a reported discrepancy between the preliminary property assessment figures given to the county by Pearson Appraisals on Nov. 14 and the final numbers handed in on Dec. 28. Due to what Powhatan Commissioner of the Revenue Jamie Timberlake explained was a data entry error by the firm handling the assessments—most likely an extra zero tacked on a number—the first projections offered a “$77 million difference on the value side” compared to the later figures. So what did that mean for Powhatan? In a nutshell, the $3 million hole county leaders thought they’d be faced with was actually around $4 million. District 1 Supervisor David Williams was one of several supervisors who expressed frustration at the situation during the workshop. Williams also asked if the county could be refunded a portion of the fee charged by the firm, provided it could be proven that they had not fulfilled their end of the contract. County Attorney Eric Gregory was asked to contact the assessment firm and sort out the details of what happened and why, as well as obtain copies of the e-mail correspondence showing when the inaccuracy was first discovered and brought to the staff’s attention. For Timberlake, the mistake amounts to a simple case of human error. Timberlake confirmed that this is the same assessment firm that Powhatan has used for the past three years, and noted that the group has been very precise in the past. Data entry has been as issue with any firm the county has ever used, he told the board members last night. Time pressure may also have played a role. “In [the assessor’s] defense, he told us they were preliminary numbers,” said Timberlake today. “We were pushing him to give us what he could.”

I was as disgusted with some actions of the old boards, BOS and SB, as some of you are with the new board. And doesn’t the right to protest extend to DG as well as those disagree with him? The CA may be gone but the more important budget issues remain. get real

DG: How many times have you threatened to leave politics in the dust..yet here ya go again. Got to hand it to ya for always supporting your three boys no matter what they say or do. Ya talk a great game about all the emotional stuff and you are about the most unhinged emotional thing runnin around these parts. Get over your hatred of the previous CA. It just ain’t healthy. I suppose that no mattter what the BOS does, it will never be good enough for some folks. At first, everyone was in an uproar because the BOS wasn’t speaking out about the CA—-because they couldn’t under the rules, while employment issues are being discussed—- then when they do try to explain their reasoning (after the matter had been settled), they are now accused of bashing and trashing, carrying on, dragging this out, whatever you want to call it. The PT has submission deadlines on Monday at noon, I believe. Since the BOS meeting took place on a Monday night, any comment from any member wouldn’t be published until the following week. I don’t think that can be fairly construed as continuing to bash and trash. People wanted an explanation, they got it. Darrell G

5 posts within 30 minutes, several just minutes apart. I’m honored. It’s good to know you care enough to post repeatedly or get a campaign going. Powhatan Land owner of Powhatan, VA

Instead of naming call, and talking about people….let’s get back to the land assessments. They need to be redone! Yes, they need to be redone! If the assessment company made that kind of mistake, how many other mistakes were made????? Like I have said before my assessment is incorrect and have tried to get someone to look at it and to no avail. Is your assessment correct or do you even know??? Please move
Jan. 19, 2012, 07:05 PM
Darrell feel free to move back to where you came from. Since you are so miserably unhappy, move. Move. We want our beautiful community back and people like the ones mentioned in these posts make it ugly. Agree too
Jan. 19, 2012, 07:01 PM
Agree also. Darrell you should be happy now. The bottom line is if they had a problem with the previous CA, they should have put it in writing and discussed how they wanted things done. How do you know she wasn’t just doing what the Old BOS wanted. You can call her whatever you want but you do not know the circumstances she was under. As far as MANY MANY MANY of us can see, the Board should keep personnel issues confidential and these guys ARE NOT. It is a travesty. I don’t put any salt in what Mr. Moore says anyway. He doesn’t get it and never will. I agree that we need to move on and they should at least thank her rather than continue to bash and trash. Many of us do not believe the “stories” Mr. Moore is telling and we are not privvy to the other side. We have already learned that these three tell half-truths and spin. That other woman too with her newspaper. So, why are we going to listen to what they say now. We only know half of the stories they tell. MOVE ON. sad

No kidding. Look world, this is the way we treat our people and employees. How sick. I am sure it was just “get out” to her and not even a “thank you” for evertyhing she did for us. Has anyone heard she was thanked for all of those years of service, working so many long hours, doing several jobs at once, all while keeping a smile on her face? Doubt it. Sick. Did you forget how much our county grew during the time that she was the administrator? The biggest in history. And, as far as I can tell, we have very few employees. She didn’t even have an assistant county administrator and for crying out loud even Cumberland has at least one of those. Nope, not Powhatan. She kept it afloat for years and just “get out” - Embarrassing. Look out world, don’t come here to work. This is how badly we will treat you. Agree

Agree Darrell G. you got what you wanted now stop. She is gone and we KNOW you are thrilled. MANY of us are unhappy about this and the way the three BOS members are treating Bishop AND the entire situation. They would be best served if they simply said thank you to her and MOVED ON. Maybe, just maybe, if that was done, we might begin to heal. ccc

This is ridiculous. Stop it. It is also embarrassing. I do not know Mrs. Bishop personally but she helped me several times with County related issues, including from a business perspective. I had just moved here from Chesterfield and met her - she was extremely knowledgeablt and assisted by my family and my business many times. She is not just a friendly face, although it was very nice to work with such a pleasant person, compared to where I came from - she KNEW what she was doing and I was impressed. It is a shame the way you and the new board members are treating her. She deserves much better. We (the sane ones in the County) would really appreciate gettig our county back on track after this fiasco. We can only see that the new board members are trying to cover tracks and deliberately make people, including Mrs. Bishop look bad and she did a LOT for this county. We can see they continue their witch hunt and are looking for ways to pick and the woman does not even have the ability to tell her side of the issues. I can tell she is too classy to stoop to your level. Stop it. Stop complaining and let the Cuonty and Mrs. Bishop move on. As it has been said numerous times, a large majority of the County wants to wish Mrs. Bishop well and APPRECIATES everything she did. And, this is not just because she was nice. But, boy are we glad she is. That is much better than the extreme negativity that we are seeing now. Stop. Submit Your Comments Below Commenting is not available in this weblog entry. |
