One man dead in Powhatan, another is charged with second degree murder Published: May 13, 2010 By Michael Copley One man is dead in Powhatan and another has been charged with murder and malicious wounding after an altercation at a home on Bell Road May 13. Rashad Brown,19, was fatally stabbed at a home in the 4700 block of Bell Road. He died in the parking lot of the Powhatan Post Office on Route 60 after being driven there by a friend. Dennis Edward Merchant, Jr.,19, was arraigned in Powhatan District Court Friday morning on charges of second degree murder and malicious wounding. Merchant indicated he will hire his own attorney, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Richard Cox. A date for a preliminary hearing has not yet been set. A second victim, who reportedly tried to break up an argument between Brown and Merchant, was transported with non life threatening injuries. Merchant was treated in an ambulance on Bell Road for a non life threatening injury and then transported to the Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 3:15 p.m. on may 13, Powhatan Deputies responded to a reported stabbing at a home in the 4700 block of Bell Road. At the same time, deputies responded to reports of a fight in the parking lot of the Powhatan Post Office on Route 60. By about 4 p.m., deputies had surrounded the home where the altercation took place. There were initial reports of a possible standoff. A tactical team comprising officers from Powhatan and Goochland Counties entered the house at about 6:15 p.m. and found no one inside. Shawn Harris, 21, who knew Brown, said the stabbing occurred after an argument at the house on Bell Road. He indicated that the stabbing happened inside the home. Brown was reportedly transported to the post office because the driver’s father is employed there and the driver didn’t think Brown would survive a wait for an ambulance. Merchant faces unrelated misdemeanor charges of obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct for an incident that occurred May 11. Powhatan Today will continue to update this story as more details become available. —Roslyn Ryan contributed to this report

Christen, I know who you are talking about now, it hit me the other night, his name wasn’t Brian though it did start with a Br. I wish you would stop posting things you hear about the other case because just about all of the things you have posted about it are false(not the Rashad’s case), and people tend to believe what they read. Almost two years ago Rashad -maybe the accused- and I am sure many of you attended the funeral of another young man whose life was taken away—way too soon- who would have thought then- two years later you all would be standing at yet another gravesite saying goodbye to yet another young friend -gone way too soon- Professor Jethro

After monitoring this thread since it started, I must say I am truely horrified. While it is sad the families of these morons have to deal with the fallout from their children’s poor decision-making abilities, I find it equally distressing how well our homegrown, well-educated youth express themselves. What’s going on in PHS? Most of these posters can’t even make a coherent sentence! Maybe that’s part of the problem…can’t make a coherent thought…can’t make a coherent decision… Christen is the biggest idiot posting on here. Are you a graduate? If so, I would like to demand a refund which equals the amount of my taxes which paid for you to learn that fine grammer…. concerned of powhatan

“This situation led to the death of a good father, son, and friend.” Some father, son and friend…chose to live a life involving drugs…not GOOD. Selfish and reckless. When you have a kid, you don’t get to be that selfish anymore. I’m sorry someone died - but when you go looking for trouble, you’re going to find it and boy did he and the others find it! I truly feel for the ones he left behind. Christen Johnson of BELL ROAD

Okay, like I’ve stated before, the Tahliek Taliaferro shooting IS NOT related to the stabbing of Rashad Brown! And Brian’s name was brought up in court, that was a friend of the Parrish’s, and don’t tell me it wasn’t brought up in court because I was at every single hearing of the Taliaferro murder. And “Peace Out”... you need to shut your mouth, on some real talk. Rashad and Tahliek were very good friends, who are you to judge anyone or anything? You’re not God, nor will you ever be close. You stay where ever you are, and mind your business, and for your information, I was very close when this happened, I was right across the street. And all of these people involved (on Rashad’s side) are my friends. And I NEVER said Rashad was a saint, everyone makes poor decisions, I realize that, but no one down here on this Earth is in any power to degrade someone for that. This situation led to the death of a good father, son, and friend. That’s a fact, and the rest will be proven in court. So for all who continue to put Rashad down, or anyone for that matter, can save it. resident of Bell rd
