A 22-year-old Powhatan County man was killed late Sunday night in Louisa County when a car he was riding in ran off the road after a deputy tried to stop it, authorities said.

Authorities identified the dead man as James J. Wolf Jr., a front-seat passenger in the car.

About 10:40 p.m., Louisa sheriff’s deputy K.S. Miller spotted a car traveling 65 mph in a 45-mph zone just south of Mineral, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

After the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, the car sped up to more than 80 mph and ran off the right side of Pendleton Road (U.S. 522) between Mica and Willis Proffitt roads, striking a utility pole, Louisa authorities said. The incident lasted about 20 seconds.

The back-seat passenger, identified by authorities as Jason Rhoten of Louisa, and the driver, Charles Alan Yacklon Jr., 27, of Henrico County, were removed from the car and flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Both suffered serious injuries that were not life-threatening.

Louisa authorities have obtained arrest warrants charging Yacklon with eluding police, a felony, and with misdemeanor reckless driving. They also issued summonses against Yacklon alleging speeding and failure to wear a seat belt, said county sheriff’s Maj. Donald A. Lowe.

Virginia State Police also are investigating.
