All hail the Queen Published: January 12, 2012 For Powhatan resident—and reigning County Fair Your Highness Queen—Frances Adams, being a senior means staying busy Perhaps the best way to understand Powhatan resident Frances Norton Adams is to look at one of her favorite quotes, attributed to Martin Buxbaum: “Some people, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty—they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.” Adams, 81, who was crowned Powhatan County Fair’s Your Highness Queen last summer, says there really is no “secret” to enjoying health and vitality long into the Golden years. Exercise and healthy eating are paramount, she says, complemented by plenty of social interaction and volunteer work. To that end, Adams stays busy volunteering at the Women’s Club Clothes Closet, ministering to children through the Good News Club and serving visitors as a docent for the Virginia Governor’s Mansion (where she has worked for over 30 years). Asked for a few more words of wisdom, Adams doesn’t hesitate for a second. Her second favorite quote, she says, is from the great baseball legend Satchel Paige: “How old would you be if you don’t know how old you were?” |
