James Lee Wolfe Sr., the Amelia man suspected of robbing, abducting, and brutally beating a Powhatan woman earlier this week, was arraigned in Powhatan General District Court this morning. He has been charged with five felonies: breaking and entering with the intent to rob, robbery, arson, aggravated malicious wounding, and abduct

According to reports from the Powhatan and Chesterfield police departments, Wolfe, 29, forced his way into the victim’s home in the 2100 block of Academy Road around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, where he beat her with a blunt object and cut her with a sharp instrument. He then set fire to her couch before forcing her out of the house and into his vehicle. He drove her to the Midlothian area of Chesterfield County where he had her to withdraw $400 from an ATM, and then left her on the side of Route 60, near the Chesterfield Towne Center. She was found on the roadside by a passerby and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

According to the Anne Reynolds, crime analyst for the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office, the victim, who is a woman in her 50’s, is described by hospital staff as being in “serious condition.” Her injuries include cuts, bruises, a broken arm, and a possible skull fracture.

Reynolds said that as far as the Sheriff’s Department can tell the victim did not know her attacker and said the incident appears to be “a random act of violence.”

Wolfe is currently being held without bond and is scheduled to appear back in court in Powhatan on March 16 at 11 a.m.

Powhatan Today will release more details about this case as they become available.

Maybe if the Powhatan Deputies patrolled our neighborhoods more often rather than running radar on 60 & 288, these types of crimes and others could be prevented. Can’t remember the last time a Deputy came thru my neighborhood. Let’s start holding our elected officials responsible and demand they do the jobs we taxpayers pay them to do. This lady is lucky she wasn’t killed, hope she has a speedy recovery.

I know this woman. She is a compassionate teacher with a wry sense of humor and very self-effacing. No one deserves this kind of treatment. She was probably scared out of her mind when this happened. Who wouldn’t be? She will need help after this and it would be great if Powhatan would pull together to help her.

I’m very sorry for this to happened to her. I can not believe anyone would ever do this, so close to my home. Something you hear only in movies. I feel very remorse for this poor lady, what has happened to her. This person is a monster and deserves to rot in jail and suffer for his consequences!!! I will keep her in my prayer. I give all my love to her and her family.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund (a division of the Virginia Workers Compensation Commission) will reimburse her for medical expenses, lost wages and possibly some of her home damage.  There is a maximum to this benefit but it should help.  The Powhatan Sheriffs Dept and/or Victim Witness Coordinator should be informing her of this.  Once prosecuted, the defendant is charged with restitution in paying the Fund back for her expenses.  This is a wonderful program.  May God heal her quickly.  Prayers are important.

I am friends with one of the victim’s brothers.  Incidentally, she has 11 siblings.  So yes, some help will be appreciated.  In particular, helping to house her out of town family as they come to visit.  Perhaps there is a local hotel/motel who would like to offer deeply discounted (read that FREE)rooms?

Does anyone know if there is some way to offer help to the woman?  Financial assistance if needed, some help if her home as she recovers, where to bring a casserole?  I am sure people would like to offer to help her in some way to show our concern.

As for the low life scumbag that did this - I hope he is convicted and sentenced harshly.
