Attorney says 17-year-old charged with murder was not the shooter

In a statement released this morning, the attorney for the teen charged in the murder of Tahliek Taliaferro said his client did not fire the shots that killed the 18-year-old Powhatan High School student.

Attorney Jason Moore said that, contrary to statements made earlier this week by Commonwealth’s Attorney Bob Beasley, his client, Joseph Parrish, 17, left, was not the shooter in the June 24 incident that also left another teenager seriously wounded.

Moore said Beasley made his statement based on the facts that were available at the time, but that more information has come to light since then.

Concerning threats that have been directed towards Parrish’s family, Moore said that people should avoid making judgments until they hear the facts of the case themselves.

“The media and public should avoid speculation, and allow the criminal justice system to run its course,” said Moore.  “Judgment in this matter should be withheld until the investigation is completed and all parties have exercised their rights under the criminal justice system.”

Moore was appointed as Parrish’s attorney by the court on Monday. He had previously represented the teen in a juvenile court matter.

It was also determined Monday that Parrish will be tried as an adult on first degree murder and malicious wounding charges.

His cousin Ethan Parrish, 24, and Stephanie Reynolds, 19, are facing the same charges stemming from Taliaferro’s death.

All three are being held without bond and are expected to appear in court on August 27 for a preliminary hearing.

Lets work together to stop this madness from reoccurring. I am a grad of Powhatan and cannot understand why our young adults use anger to dominate there self control leading to valiance.

I feel for ALL of the young adults involved in this incident.  My heart goes out to the family that lost there son.  But, my heart also goes out to the 3 teens involved in the shooting.  Whether they realize it or not they have just ruined the rest of their lives and that is so sad.

I hope the county will not let this event become a divisive issue.  Somewhere along the line these teens have been failed by our community and our system.

I agree that teens in Powhatan need safe and healthy entertainment - somewhere to go other than hanging out at Sheets and Brewsters.

You know as well as I do, 3 white people accused of killing a black teenager in Virginia will walk. Like the parent said when pleading to turn yourselfs in, “you’re coming home!” Let the justice system play out, they have to. Cant let them walk just yet. Need to spend tax payers dollars to come up with a inept excuse to free them. I guarentee, ALL THREE WILL WALK.

regardless of how we look at it this definitely was some type of hate crime. its sad for all the families involved. even though i think someone help hide these kids, there is no doubt to this.we as human beings need to just take this as wake up call and figure out how we can prevent this from happening again. come on people these children have our future in thier hands, lets get involved with our the future.

Quest,
If, God forbid, this had happened to one of your loved ones, would you have not done everything you could to help them? The parents didn’t try to get them out of the country, they were trying to protect them, making sure they had someone to look after them when they turned themselves in.
With all the vile things that have been said and the threats that have been made against not just the kids but their families, I too would have made sure my child was going to be protected.

I think a lot of accusations and finger pointing will be happening in our county over the next several weeks, causing hurt feelings and misplaced anger.
I have been out in the county and heard terrible comments being made..."that’s so and so’s cousin, I ought to go kick his a**”. “ I hope the whole family dies”. It’s like people are choosing sides, like battle lines are being drawn. Come on Powhatan! This is not our community!!!
There are a lot of questions that need to be answered and time will take care of most of those. However, we will never know what Mr. Taliaferro was thinking when he followed the other kids or all the words that preceded the horrible outcome.
We, as a county, need not to focus on he said she said, but on what we can do to prevent it from happening again. This is twice this has happened so it is NOT a random event.
As a county, what are we doing ... from lack of a better term.... to occupy our teenagers? The only thing for them to do, in county, is drive around and hang out. Boredom sets in quickly. We need to find something for them to do. I don’t have the answers, but maybe if we pull together we can come up with a workable solution.
One last thing Powhatan, remember that these are children. That ALL of their families and friends are suffering from the events, that their friends and families are NOT responsible for their actions. There are no “sides” here, only a horrific tragedy that has left us all hurting.

You know its funny how after teen parrish chaged his statements about being the shooter after he fineds out hes being tried as an adult, Also Mr. Beasly stated that we should let the system do its job and not post judgement. lol what a joke where was the systerm for the victims family when these kids where on the run? Oh thats right hanging out at Sheets in flat rock drinking coffe. I say they should hang them all. All 3 are guilty. There is no innocent here this is a open and shut case. As for the Parrish family getting threats hell what do they ecpect for raising a bunch of loosers.

I hate that this happened to all the families involved.  No parent should have to lose a child.  Also, no one has the right to take another life.  This is a sad day that all associated with the county and people involved will remember forever.
I was close to Ethan for 7 years and I still cannot process the fact that he is being charged with murder.  Somewhere, something has failed for him and the others.

Quest, I can assure you NONE of the Parrish family did NOT ‘help them out’. Don’t accuse people of things you know nothing about.

Why wasn’t the county block off like it was about 10 years ago when the 2 Powhatan boys killed the man from Goochland. Powhatan have more county cops and more state troopers. I think the parents was helping the kids out until they had time to talk to a lawyer. The kid and the two adults didn’t look bad for sleeping out side looking over their shoulder for the cops. They look so refresh for going on the run for a couple of days. What is your take on this issue.
I just wanted to put that out there
