Powhatan Today Staff Writer Michael Copley asked Bustos about the recent outcry over his appointment and about his plans for handling the issues facing the county in the immediate future:

Do you think there would have been the same reaction from citizens if you were a republican?
“I can’t answer that, there’s no way for me to know. I’d like to think that’s not the case. Those who spoke out really did want input. I thought the board did a great job explaining [why they handled things the way they did] and I think deep down people heard what the board said and understood where it was coming from.”

How will the board’s handling of the replacement process and peoples’ sentiment towards it effect your ability to represent the citizens of the second district?
“More than ever I need to try to communicate the best I know how- to talk to [residents] directly, whether its phone calls or emails or in person.  I need to communicate that I’ll take care of their needs. I was not elected, I was appointed, and I’ll always work with an eye to what Charlie would have wanted.”

Why did you not- as some called on you to do- turn down the board’s offer under the circumstances and push for an open process?
“I got a call Wednesday [Oct. 7] from the chairman of the board and was asked to replace Charlie. I had gotten to know Charlie and [Cosby] asked me to serve for twelve months and then face an election. In my heart, I never thought it was inappropriate. But now I need to reach out to everyone who feels disenfranchised by the process. I saw it [the board’s reason for handling the process as it did] the way the board saw it — it was seamless and fair. I did get second place. And I kept in touch with Charlie and I have a feel for what he wanted. It would have been more destructive if we had done it the way some wanted. I thought it made sense and now we can get the next twelve months over with. I respect the other opinion, I really do, but anything else was an unrealistic scenario.”

Because looking at the Powhatan democrats’ Web site, the second complaint that group takes with the current board is its failure to listen to citizens in the county. How will you work to make the board more transparent to fix the problems your political party has pointed out?
“As of this moment, my commitment to the democrats has to be viewed through the much more intense commitment to the residents of District 2. This is not going to be a democratic agenda. This is Charlie Green’s agenda. The democratic agenda will have to be put on the back burner for 12 months. And I think the [Powhatan Democrats] understand that. I have got to do this party-blind. My commitment is to every voter in my district regardless of their stripes.”

A lot has been made of the content that appeared on the Powhatan Democrat’s web site under your leadership. Your comment on the issue?
“I was not cognizant of the hurt that web site caused. We have some vocal democrats who enjoy their freedom of speech. But I bare full responsibility. Maybe the website went overboard. There probably was a line we crossed where we were hurtful. All we can do is say we’re sorry and move forward. You know I met Charlie on election day two years ago, and the dude was better. I was joyous the next day when he won. Nothing good will come from being this confrontational. I’m afraid that Web site caused some real hurt.”

Weigh in on Walmart.
“We’re still in the information gathering phase. Charlie [Green] wasn’t going to make a decision until he had tried to hear from everyone. All we’re going to do now [by conjecturing] is upset people. I’m going to listen to every citizen in District 2, or try to. I may have to go door-to-door again and ask people what they think. But always with one eye on what Charlie would have done. That’s my responsibility.”

Some think the county should cap building sizes. Some have suggested 50,000 square feet is an appropriate size to keep big-box retailers out of Powhatan. What are your thoughts?
“We’ll have to look at the comprehensive plan when it comes out and in light of that plan decide how to approach big boxes.
But I can’t speak about that before we see the comprehensive plan. The comprehensive plan is the sheet of granite everyone should march by. I encourage all residents to look at the plan when it becomes available and express how you feel.”

if bise wasn’t a shill for the repub party why didn’t they run someone against him in a dist the shrieking folks say is SO repub in brand?  why not moore running against bise? or was moore ordered to not challenge bise? friend griffin why not stand for election?

unless dist 2 is not really that repub (blind repub) but more votes for the cand and alot of times that happens to be a republican.

the truth is the prc considered bise friendly and he did nothing to upset them so they wouldn’t run anyone against him.  the reason his face was read was because he was holding his nose.  while that is not a nom it is as close to one as poss without the icky publicness.  else moore would have taken his goldwater-ness to the county board. bise played them like a fiddle and they bought his “incumbency” as a fix.  only trick was bise hadn’t been challenged in 03 and couldn’t campaign very eff.  he’d only barely beaten mcwaters in 99 and she was right bad as a candidate and supervisor but you new folks don’t know that.  she cost us all some money.

ha! and to hear bise has reinhart signs is even better.  need to get east and see that.

in 07 the pow rep comm misread dist 2, bise, the dist 5 nom (and poss dist 5 itself), dist 3 and dist 1 and they are still smarting.

they have been misreading for some time since…..wrt the prc, what can anyone point to demonstrating any above avg and sustainable political prowess?  Ware? Watkins? A couple folks on the school board who are powerless to get meeting minutes online? A commonwealth’s attorney who can’t wait to have to go non-partisan in state govt?

as a cty that went the highest for gilmore and one of 5 for mccain, seems the pow rep comm should have a little more to show for itself.

So I mispelled one word…um ok.

You’re going back to your insults, denegrading comments and misleading information. “The republican got less than 30% of the vote in a 3 way race.”

There was NO Republican in the race, it was a 3 way race and your boy LOST with well under a majority as well, TWICE defeated if I am not mistaken. Didn’t he run and lose to Bise in the elecetion before 07 ?

The last Board had ONE republican and PC had ONE Republican. This board has ONE republican and ZERO conservatives.

I realize that you can’t help yourself but to be nasty and demeaning. At least have some idea of what you are talking about please ?

Let me slow down for you, because AGAIN, you are so busy being nasty and demeaning (true to yourself) it’s NOT about that. It’s not about party ID. It’s been said and repeated, apparently you are either too dense, partisan or stupid to get that. Probably all of the above.

WOW! A Republican supervisor voted his conscious and did what he thought was right and not what his party told him to do, and this is a bad thing?  I am happy that Tucker as a Republican put party labels aside and chose who he thought was the best person for the job.  That’s what we hope all our elected officials would do.  And as for the lack of “transparency” and “democracy,” the Board did exactly what the governor of most states are called upon to do when a senator unexpectedly dies in office.  The Board used their judgment to make a tough decision.  Isn’t that why we have a REPRESENTATIVE democracy?  We don’t expect the governor to submit a list of nominees and hold “public comment hearings” on who he/she thinks should take over the senate seat.  The Board is following this precedent.  It is what had to be done in a rare circumstance such as this.  We as District 2 voters will have our voice heard soon enough.

Why do you think Bise was a republican.  The man has a Reinhart sign in his front year, never ran as a republican and defeated a republican to win the seat.

I wish people would get their facts straight, before talking.  Like the old saying:  It is better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open our mouth and remove all doubt.

it sure takes some oddasity [sic] to say that because that is not what i saw last thursday night.

besides, less than 30% of the district 2 electorate in 2007 voted for the republican candidate, Bise.  other years and offices can’t totally trump that.  furthermore, tucker was elected in a majority Democratic district by almost all vote tallies since 1965, in fact he probably lost votes in district 5 becuase of the R label.  party label success at the polls means virtually nothing except in the broadest terms of public sentiment, why else is the post election year curse bandied about?  or how else can obama taking VA in 2008 be explained?

by the way, spelling audacity as oddasity is not just a failure of significant typographic and spelling proporations but also a significant misunderstanding of the meaning of the word as its meaning is inherent to its spelling.  it and enfuriate [sic] should be looked up before usage in the future.

this is not normally a problem for me except when i am called out by someone who apparently has no job and can’t spell.

I disagree with the decision by ALL the members of the board, let’s not call out just one because he has a R after his name.

Your condescending tone and language once again highlight the arrogance which again…IS the problem on all sides of the aisle. The “rabble” and the people who enable politicians to gain nomination from their party are the bosses in this country, not the other way around. I know that many in the current administration “look to Mao for guidance”, but the left hasn’t completely neutered everyone who dissents YET

Seriously, you are not nearly skilled enough at the English language or with your typing skills to be condescending to anyone. Could you at least capitalize sentences so our eyes won’t bleed ?

I think Tucker did what he felt was the right thing, though I disagree, he also had the stones to come to the GOP meeting and take the heat. You can’t always say that about everyone.

Time will tell if Bustos is willing to do the same, he HAS been put in a very difficult position. How to keep his base happy and not enfuriate an already irate constituency who is 180 degrees at odds with his base.

We currently have a President who attacks any citizen, group, or network that dares disagree with him and does all the fluff interviews with everyone else, I truly hope Mr. Bustos is better than that.

and so we wait for the know-it-all posters to digest that one….

uh, obama just said republicans do what they are told…sounds like the republican poster expected tucker to do what he was told by the unelected leaders of the pow republican committee.  does that mean the poster and obama agree and are right?

tucker was a man of great, vaunted integrity until he crossed the party leaders while thinking for himself it sounds like…..now he is just a chump?  how ironic.

that was what was cool about Bush and terrible about Obama.

once you get elected you do what you see is best when that is your job.  you don’t continue to campaign or worry about the pollster du jour.  bush acted like a leader and not a weathervane.  maybe so did tucker.

that is why presisdential, guv, senate terms are so long.  so there is time for folks to see the wisdom of decisions rather than knee-jerk emotional reactions prevailing from the mobs.

that is why delegate and representatives are 2 years.  they cannot drift too far from the rabble….

I don’t understand why the republican supervisor would want to put a democrat on the supervisors. Makes no sense. I’m ticked about it. Don’t know why Carson Tucker did that.  I thought he was a republican.  That’s what he was in the election at least I thought so. Why would he want to push a democrat on the board any way?

UGG BOOT PROMOTER of Powhatan
Oct. 22, 2009, 11:08 AM

Since your are promoting the UGG Boot, your concerns must be more with the Chineese importers than the citizens in Powhatan.  This whole issue is a shame and the cover-ups and personal agenda issues in this is transparent.  What harm would it have been to ask the public to submit a resume and give them a 1 week deadline?  That would have been the fair and honest approach.  Tell me, what would 1 week have done to destroy the progress of the BOS? By George…I believe this is a “Spin Zone” issue. You folks must be drinking too much Kool-Aid!
