Case against man charged with possession of marijuana continued

A federal search warrant executed by the DEA turned up over a half pound of marijuana in a county home last year.

Federal agents searched Glenn Worrell’s home September 4, 2008 because the individual targeted in the warrant was known to frequent Worrell’s residence.

Worrell arrived home while agents were conducting their search and he told them he had bought a pound of marijuana every three months for the last five or six years.

He said the majority was for personal use but admitted to selling small quantities of the drug to five regular clients.

It was noted that Worrell has no prior criminal history and his bond was continued ahead of a sentencing hearing next term.

Do you really think the residents of Powhatan county support the pro-drug views of norml.org?  Please put the bong down and grow up.

Whether you agree or not, marijuana is illegal.

The research shows that:

-Reaction time for motor skills, such as driving is reduced by 41% after smoking 1 joint and is reduced 63% after smoking 2 joints.

-Data has shown that people high on marijuana show the same lack of coordination on standard “drunk driver” tests as do people who have had to much to drink.

-A yearly survey of students in grades 8 to 12 shows that 23% of 8th graders have tried marijuana at least once and by tenth grade, 21% are “current” users. Among 12th graders, nearly 50% have tried marijuana at least once, and about 24% were current users. (ZERO TOLERANCE SENDS A CLEAR MESSAGE TO OUR KIDS)

Pot is a “gateway drug” or a starter drug. It is ruining lives and being abused by our kids more than you realize. It is wrong to send the message that it’s just a little pot for private use; oh yeah and to sell to at least 5 (admitted to) regular customers.

Also, recent “car hopping” has been linked to drug use. Schools need to wake up and face the problem. This problem is so much bigger than this community will admit. Don’t bury this case or you are sending the WRONG message to our kids.

I feel sorry for the wife & kids, especially the kids; BUT what you permit you encourage and it seems Mrs. Worrell was complicit in this activity by allowing it. I question her judgment and feel her allowing an illegal activity in her home (whether or not you think it should be illegal) demonstrates a failure of good judgment.

Oh and it is annoying when people try to make criminals sound less guilty by saying they do so much good for others. Really? I’ve heard that Saddam Hussien, who everyone agrees was a brutal dictator, provided wonderful services in Iraq including free education through the university level, free hospitilization to everyone and a focus on the eradication of literacy. So he shouldn’t have been removed from his stranglehold position where he was responsible for thousands of murders? (Obviously Mr. Worrell is no Saddam; just quit making excuses for people.)

Honestly, someone who admits to buying/smoking a pound of pot every three months is smoking more than 10 joints a day (and that is a really low estimate). How productive can they be? How safe are they to be around? Are they “doing good” for the kids while impaired?

Just stop making excuses already. That is one of the things people do way to often these days… be accountable

In response to John E aka concerned citizen.  I have heard it from the horses mouth that those SO CALLED clients were friends.  I too choose not to use illegal drugs but how many upstanding citizens are self medicating themselves with alcohol, anti-depressants and other PRESCRIPTION drugs.  As a nurse at one of the local hospitals I can tell you that 50% of the folks coming in are addicted to many LEGAL substances.  I don’t think that Mrs. Worrell can be judged on the poor judgement of her husband.  She is a role model in the community and you need to get OFF your high horse.  I’m sure we could find some skeletons in your closet as well!!!!

Why doesn’t the Powhatan Today print the large stack of letters from friends and family that the Worrell’s have that speak for Glenn’s character?  Why is it that all the news we see has to be bad news?  John E????  Does it really make a difference to you that somebody was selling drugs in powhatan?  The Worrell family has done so much for me since ive met them.  They tought me how to appreciate family and how to treat other people with respect and not to judge them.  I think John E needs to spend a little time with the Worrell family to find out what im talking about.  Glenn has made HUGE strides in changing his life since this incident and im truly proud to know Glenn and Isabella Worrell.  As for John E…..go get some friends or something.

It seems with all the violent crimes occurring in Powhatan at this time - The POWHATAN TODAY would have other things to write about than some little drug case where the person obviously has a substance abuse problem.  When half of the U.S. is medicating themselves with so called “legal” substances such as prescription pills, anti-depressants and alcohol - I FIND THIS ARTICLE SAD AND PITIFUL.  Get it together POWHATAN TODAY!!

I know the Worrell family, they are fine folks. You could not ask for better friends, neighbors or family.I have and would trust my 12 year old son with them. They, Mr. and Mrs. Worrell, have both gone out of their way to not only help me but to help countless other people. My prayers are with them, for charity is in their hearts. One person wrote , that selling drugs is not a mistake, it is a choice. Has any of us ever made a bad choice? They are called mistakes. Mistakes can be corrected, Mr. Worrell has made great strides in correcting his mistake. He is a better person today than he was yesterday and tomorow he will be a better preson than he was today. He is a far better person than he was than when the incident took place. My prayers are also with those of us who have seemingly judged the Worrells’, may our hearts be softened and be not quick to judge (anyone). In the Book of Matthew does it not say “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” And also “For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again” I ask for compassion as we drag the Worrell name through this forum

It sounds like everyone wants this to blow over.  Why do we not want the citizens to know what is going on in the county?  How could Powhatan today publish the truth?  They should be ashamed.  It is ok, if the name in the court report is a “nobody”.

It is what it is!

John E AKA (concerned Citizen)

Nancy Feldman.  Yes “Concerned Citizen” did misspell principal and maybe he or she would have done better in life had they had Mrs. Worrell as a teacher. I’m not going to dispute that point.

Mary Webster.  Your suspicions were incorrect; I did not have knowledge of the case beforehand, and was NOT waiting for the release to throw gas on the fire.  I know of the family and I was disappointed to see this.

And to your second comment “anyone with enough true concern to voice an opinion should have the courage to post a name”.  So here it is.

And Billy Moran, I’m not perfect, but I do not have marijuana at my house for sale.  Per the article “He said the majority was for personal use but admitted to selling small quantities of the drug to five regular clients.”  This does not appear to be a role model.

And to close, Mrs. Worrell may be a great person who knew nothing about the marijuana being sold by her husband.  But it would be surprising that she would be unaware of a person who uses such a large amount of marijuana.  Per the article “he had bought a pound of marijuana every three months for the last five or six years.”  I do not have any marijuana at home, but I would think this is a lot.

I along with you hope Mrs. Worrell had no knowledge of this crime.

I would have to disagree with you.  Selling drugs is not a mistake, it is a choice.  He may be a good person, but the decision was made to pollute Powhatan.

I do not know the wife or her involvement, but the citizens should know if she was aware of his activities.  Maybe someone from the Powhatan Today can sit in on the trial and let us know.

She is in a role model position.
