In an effort to preserve original material from the Civil War- maps, letters, diaries and pictures- the Civil War 150 Legacy Project, in partnership with the Library of Virginia, is conducting a digital-archiving project.

As part of that effort, the Powhatan Tourism Council will host Laura Drake Davis, an archivist for the Civil War 150 Legacy Project, in the large conference room at the Powhatan Library on Monday, August 23 at 2 p.m.

Teams of archivists are scanning privately-owned materials for inclusion on both the Library of Virginia and the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission websites.

In Powhatan, the tourism council has expanded the document-digitization process to include photographs and other materials from the Civil Rights period, to be used in the Powhatan Heritage Project and the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail.

The Heritage Project is a collection of over 100 historical photographs of Powhatan, which have been enlarged and hung throughout Powhatan’s local businesses and government offices.
