Travis Ayers, a 2005 graduate of Powhatan High School, has graduated cum laude from Christopher Newport University with a degree in Biology and Environmental Science.  He played rugby for CNU three years and participated in community service activities.

He is the son of Jack and Valarie Ayers, and the grandson of Helen Ayers and Jim and Vivian Cox.


Glen Hiler, son of Adam and Marcia Hiler of Powhatan, has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Philosophy from Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

Hiler graduated from home school in 2005.


The following Hampden-Sydney students were named to the Dean’s List for the second semester of the 2008-2009 academic year.  To earn this distinction, students must achieve at least a 3.3 semester grade point average out of a possible 4.0.

Kyle Patrick Duffey, a rising junior – Kyle is a graduate of Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot and is the son of John & Merry Duffey of Richmond.

Olander Ronald James Fleming, a rising senior – Olander is a graduate of Powhatan High School and is the son of Olander C. & Janet Fleming of Moseley.

Chad Allen Pleasants, a rising senior – Chad is a graduate of Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot and is the son of Glennis J. Pleasants of Powhatan and David Pleasants of Cartersville.

Matthew Brown Winfree, a rising senior – Matt is a graduate of Powhatan High School and is the son of John & Tina Winfree of Powhatan.


Kathleen Maxey, a rising Junior at Longwood University, has been awarded a $500 scholarship for the third consecutive year from VA Gamma Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators.  Alpha Delta Kappa scholarships are awarded to outstanding female students who intend to pursue a career in education. 

A Liberal Studies major focusing on Elementary Education, Miss Maxey was accepted into the Teacher Preparatory program in late February after passing the Praxis I test, a professional teacher’s examination prescribed by the Virginia Department of Education for teachers seeking initial licensure.  She is presently completing her student teaching practicum at Enon Elementary School in Chesterfield County, where she is working with a first grade class.

Miss Maxey was selected to become a member of the Longwood Ambassadors Program, a student service organization that assists the university in admissions, public relations, and alumni activities.
