Historical Society to sponsor World War II Roundtable
On Sunday May 18th at 3 P.M., the Powhatan County Historical Society will present its first World War II Roundtable program. The event will be held at the Village Building. Admission is free and open to the general public.

Recently, the Historical Society has decided to explore new programs such as the World War II project with the hope of attracting new members and interest in the organization. The World War II group will be modeled after the highly successful Powhatan Civil War Roundtable.

The initial goal is to present four programs annually, and ultimately include dinner speaker programs. The Society believes that because we are losing our World War II veterans and survivors in alarming numbers, that it is imperative that we not lose connection with the “Greatest Generation”.

The first program scheduled is the fascinating story to be presented by Rick Gideons, a member of the Powhatan County School Board. Gideons will relate his relationship to Hauptmann Heinz Max Georg Fick, a German officer who lost his life at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in December 1944. Mr. Gideons’ father-in-law also participated in that battle.

Powhatan’s World War II veterans will be honored guests of the Historical Society at this and all ensuing programs. President John Rothert will moderate the initial programs. “There are many stories that need to be told. We hope to have future programs of local interest, but will not limit the scope of Roundtable topics in an effort to educate the public about the most important event of the 20th century,” Rothert stated.

Book signing this Saturday
Powhatan author John Balcom, who recently published the thriller Taken, will be signing copies of his book this Saturday from 4 to 7 at Video 2000 in the South Creek shopping center. The event will feature a $100 raffle and the winner will be drawn at 7 p.m.

School notes:
Catherine Shores, a freshman at Powhatan High School, has been selected to receive a scholarship to attend a summer Youth Conservation Camp at Virginia Tech.

Correction:
In an article in last week’s Powhatan Today, Powhatan’s Acting Building Official Ralph Shelton’s title was reported incorrectly. Shelton is the head of the Powhatan County Building Inspection Department. We sincerely regret the error.
