Community Briefs School system will offer grief counseling for students Powhatan County Schools have announced that the school system will be making grief counseling available to county students still struggling to deal with the death of fellow student Tahliek Taliaferro. Taliaferro, a popular student athlete and rising senior, was murdered June 24. “The concern, at this point, is to provide assistance for students and adults who may need to talk to a professional as they grieve the loss of a friend,” wrote Powhatan County School Superintendant Margaret S. Meara in an e-mail last week. Guidance couselors will be available to help students after the start of school and group counseling sessions will be offered at PHS conducted as well. For more information on these counseling services, call Powhatan County Schools at (804) 598-5700 or see next week’s edition of Powhatan Today for a full story. Prescription for Success offers supplies to students in need The 2008-2009 school year is just around the corner and the Coalition of Powhatan Churches and the Plaza Pharmacy are once again coordinating a program entitled “Prescription for Success.” This program provides school supplies for all children who are in need, regardless of age. Coordination is made with the parents of YMCA’s “Bright Beginnings” so there is no duplication of services. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis to families with a verified financial need until the funds are depleted. For more information, or an application, call R. Vaughan (804) 598-3351 before August 25. Plaza Pharmacy contributes to and assists with this program. Buying locally helps keep a part of your sales tax in the county. Organizers ask residents to consider donating to Prescription of Success, because it costs approximately $65 for the back to school supplies for each child.
