Huguenot Ruritan Club accepting nominations for Outstanding Volunteer Citizen

The Huguenot Ruritan Club is seeking nominations for the outstanding Powhatan Volunteer Citizen of the Year award for 2008.  This award recognizes an outstanding Powhatan citizen who, in the opinion of a panel of judges, volunteers an exceptional amount of their time and effort to improve the quality of life in Powhatan County.  The 2008 recipient will be announced at a dinner in March 2009.

Deadline for receiving nominations for this award is January 23, 2009.  Nominating forms are available from Huguenot Ruritan Club.  Contact Dick Lewis, at 598-6408 or e-mail to dickreva@verizon.net.

The winner will be awarded a plaque recognizing their commitment to community service and the club, in the name of the recipient, will donate $100 to a charity of their choice.


Master Gardners honor 2008 graduating class

The Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener Association class of 2008 graduated on Thursday, Jan. 8. The ceremony took place at Goochland Firehouse #5. Those graduating were Keith Flannagan, Leigh Hershey, Lorraine Hoke, Bernice Koelzer, Mary Marsh, Larry O’Neil, Chuck Peple, Sonja Pianka, Francis Sheets and Simon Wong. Each graduate was required to complete 50 hours of classroom instruction in subjects like botany, entomology, etc. Additionally, they were required to participate in 50 hours of community service in areas of gardening in Goochland and Powhatan Counties.


Marshall graduates from Air Force basic training

Air Force Airman Calli D. Marshall, a 2008 Powhatan High School graduate, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values and military customs and courtesies. They also performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force.

Marshall is the daughter of Michael Marshall of Powhatan.
