Community prayer service set for Sunday at Powhatan High School

Churches from around Powhatan County will gather for a community prayer service at Powhatan High School this Sunday.

The idea to hold the service, which will be held at 6 p.m., was conceived by a group of local Powhatan church leaders.

Those leaders said in a press release today that they are concerned about recent turmoil in the community that that arose after the murder trial of two white residents convicted of murdering African-American high school student Tahliek Taliaferro.

That fact that Ethan Parrish, the man who admitted to shooting Taliaferro, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and not first degree murder has upset many in the community and led to allegations that racism played a part in the verdict.

“Racism is neither American nor Christian.  We do not deny that racism is a part of our community’s historical past, but we adamantly refuse to allow it to be a part of our present or future,” said the press release.

Several local church leaders are expected to speak at the service, which will last about an hour.

“This is our chance to take a strong stand in our community – a chance to speak with our feet and publicly take a stand on this issue,” said the release. “It is not about the trial or the verdict – it’s about how we believe God sees skin color … [w]e will have the chance to stand together – as black folks, white folks and every color in between – and declare our unity in Jesus Christ.”

What happened was a terrible tragedy…I know family’s of both sides, and I for one can feel the loss of both sides..But the media makes out like Powhatan is a racist community..I moved here in 83 from down south, and let me tell you, the people here are more friendly than i have ever seen anywhere else…I would NOT move out of Powhatan…We as a community have felt the pain of both sides, and we as a community will become whole again..We will as a family of equals overcome this..RIP Tahliek..For God forgives us all

It is ironic that all these posts are under the heading about the unity service for the community. I am not defending Ethan, Stephanie, or Joey by any means but no one on here that feels that justice has not been served will except the fact that Tahliek and his friends were not all innocent either. The point is still being missed that we have a big problem in Powhatan and its time we stop worrying about who is right and who is wrong and admit there is a BIG problem and do something about it. I don’t know anything to do myself other than pray that God will send a revival to Powhatan. That our eyes will be opened and realize the drugs are destroying our community.

Thank you J. for that. I wondered if anyone has thought about the fact that Stephanie was the prosecutions “star witness”. Her job was to point all fingers to Ethan and make it look bad for him and take the blame off of her. Do you think she told the truth about everything? I know she testified about the bag but I think it was refuted by the defense and this was never proven in court. And Friend they were pulled in a driveway not parked on the road I personally read the statements by the witnesses and know this to be fact.

The bag was a statement that Stephanie made. The guys in the car following said that they did not see a bag on the liscense plate or one in Joey’s hand.  The lady that saw this happen saw Joey out of the car but did not see a bag in his hand or a gun in his hand.  The drive way they used was a road to a set of stables not to a house.  No one else saw a bag at all or testified that there was even a bag. There was no bag introduced as evidence. This was what was said in court. Also the driveway was not chosen by Ethan, he had wanted her to pull over in several other driveways but she had decided on that one.  PLEASE don’t miss understand me, this should have never happened and it is terrible that Tahliek was killed. I know for a fact that Ethan’s sister went and cried her eyes at his grave.  Ethan is at fault but everyone there is as well.

I did look down it Saturday on my way home. So how long are the driveways on Dorset?

chesterfieldst, You don’t live in Powhatan. have you ever been on Dorset rd? The Parrish cousin had to pull in some one driveway. Did anybody ever contact the owner of the house where they pulled off the road? If they didn’t pull in a driveway, that’s why the victim car slowed down to pass the Parrish cousins SUV. It’s a two lane rd with no turning Lane. You need to take a ride down Dorset Rd.

Hey.. I don’t live there and I don’t know Dorset Rd. I don’t know how far back off the road they were.

This is what I have heard.  My family lives there but not in that area….....

I said convincing explanation ;-)  thanks chesterfieldst

Does anyone honestly believe they could hide by covering their license plate with a plastic bag?  Maybe they could, I don’t know where exactly they were on Dorset so maybe covering their plate with a plastic bag made them invisible.  ;-)
