You’ve said it to yourself a thousand times: Sure Powhatan has wonderful parks and plenty of recreational activities, but what about those times when I just want to dress my Golden Retriever up like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and party down?

Well, you asked and Powhatan’s Parks and Recreation Department delivered.

On Oct. 31, Powhatan County will host it’s first ever Howl-O-Ween VIP Pawty.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature pet-related exhibitors, costume contests (with awards going to the funniest, scariest and most creative get-ups), food and games for pups and people alike.

The festivities get started with Yappy Hour from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and wrap up with a festive Howl-O-Ween parade through the Village from 1 to 2 p.m.

While all dogs are welcome, there are a few rules: dogs must be up to date on their vaccinations and remain on leashes during the event. Dogs with aggression issues or female dogs that are pregnant or in heat are politely asked to stay home.

Lest pet owners think the day is all about fun and games, there will also be a drive through rabies shot clinic ($8 per shot) on the day of the party from 9 a.m. to noon on the rescue squad grounds.

Registration forms for the Howl-O-Ween contest are available at the County Administration building. For more information on the festivities or the rabies shot clinic please call the Powhatan County Parks and Recreation Department at (804) 598-1304.
