County reaction to Wal-Mart announcement has been mixed Published: August 26, 2009 By Michael Copley, Staff Writer A community discussion, once confined to gossip and speculation, was brought into the open last week after county leaders confirmed they met with Wal-Mart representatives August 18; and Powhatan residents seem split on the possibility of a big box store going in on Route 60. Those in favor of a Wal-Mart say the store would offer convenience, selection and help drive down retail prices in the area, and they tout the potential tax revenue and jobs the store could generate. “We welcome all businesses as we try and get a diverse economic base,” Supervisor Carson Tucker said in April, when talk about Wal-Mart was speculation.
Many have also questioned county leadership’s handling of the issue and are demanding greater transparency. “Whether you’re for or against a Wal-Mart, the fact remains, our county will never be the same and now neither will our business community,” resident Sally Mullikin wrote in an online posting to the Powhatan Today Web site.

John - we track votes by IP address. Here’s the breakdown as of today: 356 votes have been cast. (73% No, 24% Yes, 3% Undecided) 1 party has voted 5 times (4 no, 1 yes), 4 parties have voted 3 times (all no), 20 parties have voted 2 times (13 yes, 27 no), the remaining 309 parties have voted only once. It is not unreasonable to assume that some of these duplicate IP votes came from a computer shared by multiple members of a household or business or a shared public computer - such as those at the public library. Even if any or all of those were one party voting multiple times intentionally, it would not change the percentages by much in either direction. John of Powhatan

There again goes Powhatan Today using faulty figures or quotes. This survey is such crap. You know small business owners and anti Wal-Mart people kept hitting the survey to alter it to their side of view. The survey should be done in front of Food Lion or 4th Fridays by a neutral party to show the county’s true opinion. Anyway it does not matter Wal-Mart is coming and there is nothing the small business owners can do, but lower their price and become competitive. I just drove 20 miles past numerous local businesses to go to Wal-Mart to save money and convenience. Johnny Liberty of Somewhere in Powhatan

“There’s no stopping progress” How many times have we heard these lines before? YES, there is a way to fight city hall, and to slow down progress. IF IT IS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE to do so. The problem is, just as it is with our Congressmen and women and Senators who think they know better than those that elected them. I’d love to see a referendum on whether or not to ban anyone who has a vested interest in real-estate development, from serving on any decision making board in the county. Finally, if the current elected officials do not heed the will of the people, immediate recall elections need to proceed. Ms.Reasonable of Powhatan

I, my family and friends will all welcome the new Walmart in Powhatan and shop there on a regular basis. I personally do not see the harm in having one on Rt. 60 and do not see which business will be endangered due to Walmart’s presence. As for road use…we are already using Rt.60 to get to the out of county stores and businesses….having one closer will only save on fuel costs and decrease chances for an accident not having to enter busy Midlothian. Wait until gas prices rise to $5+ per gallon and you’ll be wishing your shopping was closer. For those that hate Walmart no matter where they are located…think how much more convenient a closer Walmart will be for you to ‘not’ shop at stand your ground. (But, I secretly think you’ll be shopping there too.) Welcome Walmart! Don Silberbauer of Powhatan

If Wal-Mart forced businesses to close why are there so many businesses always surrounding Wal-Mart? Wal-Mart has it’s place and so does the “mom & pop” stores. Wal-Mart does not have everything! It does not have service and if it’s not on the shelf, don’t bother asking. Wal-Mart carries a little of everything, but not a lot of anything. I worked at Wal-Mart for two years, I know. Smaller shops have different items, often higher quality (and price). You wouldn’t go to Plaza Pharmacy to buy a punch bowl, but would if you wanted a nice figurine for a housewarming (or whatever). Having Wal-Mart come to Powhatan is GREAT. I don’t shop in Powhatan because the stores I frequent are located in other counties or in Richmond. All the negative people speaking against the Wal-Mart would probably be the first ones to step inside the Wal-Mart (if it comes here). Powhatan will not only benefit from a Wal-Mart being here, but a Shoney’s would be nice also. And keep in mind, Wal-Mart coming to Powhatan would bring jobs. Elizabeth Dennis of Powhatan

It has been proven that Walmarts over the course of 5 years do not create jobs & do not increase tax revenue. Walmart will close down many small businesses in Powhatan & by stealing business from them and so Walmart will not really create jobs & increase revenue in the long run. A Walmart in Powhatan is a big mistake which will remove the rural feel which county officials & the planning board have worked so hard to maintain in the past 10 years. Powhatan residents who want to shop at a Walmart already do & so a Walmart in Powhatan county is a grave mistake and an unnecessary evil :(. If Walmart comes to Powhatan sign me up for the boycott! Walmart was only a worthwhile business when they originally sold American made products. Don Silberbauer of Powhatan

The development of commercial property along Rt60 is inevitable, and as long as it stays on RT60 a Wal-Mart is a definite benefit to the community. To the opponents of the project, I’m not sure how a Wal-Mart differs from the South Creek (new Food Lion)development. Lori Guthrie of Powhatan

Having a Walmart or any “big box” store in Powhatan would be a terrible thing! Yes it would generate jobs, tax revenue etc. however - I think there could be other ways to do that - the community and rural feel is why I live here and want to raise my family here - if I wanted the convenience of a walmart in my backyard I would have chosen to live in Chesterfield County. As far as the administrators keeping things under wraps - well they have a tough job - so many complain about taxes etc. they have to consider something - but as far as I am concerned if you want to live in a rural community you have to be willing to pay for it - and if that means a little higher tax so be it - I would rather do that and drive 20 minutes to a Walmart.
