After 32 years of service to Powhatan County, Glenda Saunders has retired from her position as the Deputy Clerk of Powhatan District Courts.

Saunders officially retired Jan. 1, 2009.

“She was an excellent employee and I have nothing but praise for her commitment to the job,” said Mrs. Gloria M. Blankenship, General District Court Clerk.

Mrs. Saunders’ work included handling the paperwork for criminal and civil warrants (Juvenile and Domestic Relations cases are also under the jurisdiction of the Combined Courts), traffic, setting the court docket, subpoenas, warrants in debt and coordinating with attorneys.

“That was probably the most challenging part of the job,” she said, along with learning the new laws and fee schedules which came out of the legislature each July. But the job became even more challenging during the past five years with more directives being passed down from the Supreme Court, she reported.

“But we were public servants and, as a public service job, it was truly rewarding being able to help people through the process,” she said.

She recalled that for the first 18 years the clerks worked in the tiny office across from the courthouse in what is now, ironically, the Hair Court.

It was not until the major renovation and addition to the courthouse in 1992 that they had adequate office space.

Glenda and Stuart Saunders, a semi-retired business man, have been married for 39 years. They have three children and four grandchildren, including one set of twin grandsons.

The Saunders recently purchased a home in Florida. They plan to make their permanent home at their property at Lake Gaston, spend some time at the Florida home and look forward to traveling in the United States and Europe.
