Crews set to begin work on Powhatan Walmart Published: December 12, 2011 Powhatan Today Staff Construction crews are gearing up to start work on the planned Powhatan Walmart, though an official opening day has not yet been nailed down. According to Powhatan Planning Director Brandon Stidham, workers began clearing trees and building access roads at the site, located near Luck Stone, shortly after Thanksgiving. The retailer paid $3.3 million for the property, according to the commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer, which helped broker the sale. The planned 153,000-square-foot Supercenter will feature a grocery store, a pharmacy and a Subway sandwich shop. Though initial reports from the company had indicated a possible opening in late summer of 2012, County Building Official Ralph Shelton said Walmart representatives are now talking about a date closer to next Christmas. Even that, however, may be difficult. Said Shelton, “They’ve got a lot of work to do.” Media General’s Louis Llovio contributed to this report |

Not a life changing event, just a convenience and savings to many. And let’s face it, neither Macys or even Target was coming out here. Nor likely Kroger, others. I just know every time I visit the Midlo Walmart I see a lot of Black and Orange….. Dr. Miguelito Loveless of The Wild Wild West

I agree with what Gayle said. I simply do not understand the appeal of Wal-Mart. Gayle of Powhatan

I was one who didn’t want a Walmart. Not sure what I would have wanted, but that wasn’t it. It is coming now and those of us who didn’t want it now have to learn to live with it. I do shop at Walmart occasionally but have to tell you much of my money will still be going out of the county. I have never enjoyed the shopping experience at Walmart. They start out clean and fresh but things change. Pretty soon they are just a average Walmart. Most of those employees don’t seem to be all that “thankful” to have a job. Not that they should be. It is all in who the management is of each store so lets hope that our kids and neighbors are lucky enough to have a managerial staff that is good to them. I have never enjoyed the grocery side of Walmart. Grocery shopping for me needs to be quick and easy, and never has been there. So I am willing to give it a chance but as proven by the other Walmarts, my expectations aren’t too high. I am hoping more than anything that I will not be able to see it from the road, and that it stays clean near that area. Now I will have a longer commute to and from home, more traffic, and dodge a lot more than the work trucks that are already here, but I shall learn to live with it. It sounds like many think it will be a lifechanging event and their dream has come true. I hope it is everything you hoped for. William Perdue of Powhatan

3 Miles to Target, That’s only if you live on Page Road, JMHO, I like your response and respect it; the facts are why can’t my salary be spent in my county instead of supporting Chesterfield. bw

Personally I am thrilled to be able to pick up a box of nails, can of paint and hundreds of other items without driving a 20+ mile round trip. And a little retail competition can only improve the current businesses customer service and prices. Pharmacies are already forced to match Walmart and other national pharmacy prices. bw

You got to “vote” for Walmart and Apartments? So assume you are on BOS? I voiced my opionion to BOS in favor of Walmart (Jobs, shopping, retail competition, moving sales tax monies from Chesterfield to Powhatan) and against apartments (increased crime, policing, school costs, and really no real need - just east of 288 on Rt 60, across from Kroger, is a apartments construction site that has been sitting vacant for over a year? Must be a reason? Walmart vs. apartments - apples and oranges to me. And to many these days, any job is a great job. Not everyone starts out as a bank president and work experience that instills a work ethic is only good. And a job like Walmart for young people can inspire them to achieve more. Check out the list of current business leaders who once worked for McDonalds or other fast food chains or even delivered newspapers. Most should not aspire to retire from Walmart but some will as managers, etc. and will do very well. JMHO of Powhatan County, VA

Oh yeah, GREAT jobs will come to Powhatan. We all know that Walmart pays so well and Walmart workers are so joyful in their positions. *snort* I’ve already started seeing the “Say No To Apartments” signs. I bet he same people who don’t want apartments said yes to Walmart. Well, DUHHHHHH! Here comes Walmart, here comes apartments, there goes the neighborhood. Mark my words, it’s the beginning of the end of this county as we know it. Call me nostalgic. Call me a tree hugger, but don’t you DARE call me a hypocrite. I voted against Walmart. Made my calls. Sent my emails. When things start going down hill -and THEY WILL - it won’t be MY fault. It’ll be yours - you people who can’t drive 3 extra miles to Target and who want those “jobs” oh glorious, wonderful Walmart jobs - can I puke now? - in our beautiful county. Yucko!
