Crunching in the classroom?

Nutrition 101 is just one course in Powhatan’s 2008 Adult Education program

For professional herbalist Debbie Markel, eating right and taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be as difficult as advanced calculus.

“My passion is wellness and health promotion and trying to keep people from getting sick,” said Markel, the owner of Apothecarian Herbals in Powhatan.

“It’s all about prevention and eating healthy is the first step.”

To better share her philosophy with the rest of the world, Markel will be teaching a class entitled Practical and Easy Nutrition as part of the Powhatan County Public Schools spring 2008 Adult Education Program.

Markel has been teaching the three-week class, which focuses on learning to read labels and includes tips for giving recipes a “healthy makeover,” since 2004.

FYI

Registration for Powhatan County Public School’s Adult Education classes will be open until Jan. 28.

County residents are encouraged to register as early as possible to secure space.

For more information, contact Sharon Faubert at 598-5710, ext. 307.

The class’s listing in the blue course offering book, which was mailed to every home in the County a few weeks ago, is just one of over 30 classes being offered this year.

Other courses include CPR Training, Practical Spanish (both a beginning and an intermediate level) and a financial workshop for investors.
