The following case was heard last week in Powhatan Circuit Court.

James Cook, an inmate at Deep Meadow Correctional Center, was found guilty of possessing .909 grams of heroin.

The violation is a class five felony and can carry up to a 10 year sentence, but Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Richard Cox agreed to a two year sentence with all but three months suspended.

Defense attorney Susan L. Parrish told the court Deep Meadow staff made “inappropriate promises” to her client and subjected him to “internal punishments,” and that, “in the interest of justice,” Cox agreed to the sentence she proposed.
