Domestic dispute leads to fatal shooting Published: April 22, 2009 By Michael Copley, Staff Writer Sources at the Sheriff’s Office say they do not expect charges to be filed against a juvenile who shot and killed a man Saturday night on Ridge Road. Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ann Reynolds said a woman reported a domestic altercation between her and her brother to 911 Saturday at 11 p.m. A short time later, 911 received a second call saying shots had been fired. The juvenile reportedly fired the weapon defending his mother during the domestic assault. Powhatan Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Officials are not releasing information on the gun at this time and are withholding the victim’s and juvenile’s names for the sake of the juvenile, officials say. |

This is a sad situation no matter how you look at it. I definitely don’t think that the child should be held accountable, he is too young to realize the severity of what he’s done. He was just being a son, protecting his mother, doing what he thought he had to do. If anyone should be held accountable it’s the owner of the gun for not properly securing it. Regardless who is at fault, i feel bad for everyone that is involved, it is tragic and i wish the family luck in the future. dontgothere of United States

This entire event is tragic, but in light of the age of youth who had to shoot to protect his mother I implore the family not to think after such an event the child does not need counseling. While resuming a normal routine is great and recommended what happens with the flashbacks and the thoughts? Should the child just put on a brave face daily and move on like taking a life is an everyday occurance? He must be provided the means to express his deepest feelings regarding this tragedy with a professionally trained counselor. He and his mother are both victims of abuse. They both need help to deal with such a devastating situation. My prayers are with the family and I am sorry for their loss. chesterfieldst of chesterfield

I am truly saddened by the out-pouring of negative statements towards this family at an already tragic time in their lives. In a situation like this, no one is a winner. A mother has lost a son, a sister has lost a brother, children have lost their father, and a nephew has lost an uncle…how do you people even begin to point a finger?! Regardless of your knowledge of those involved, and what your personal feelings are towards them, they ALL should be lifted up in prayer. You say you are so concerned about the young child who took his own uncle’s life, while defending his mother, yet you post these hurtful statements about his mother and family on-line for the world to see, and yes, even young Tre’. In light of other tragic news coming out of Powhatan, is this really how you want your county represented? I am very embarrassed to know that I was a resident of Powhatan, and am very glad that I know longer a resident there. Shame on you that live there, and for those of you contacting the paper from the surrounding counties, for all of your hateful and harmful statements. Let this family grieve in peace, and keep your negativity to yourselves! Geraldine S. Purnell of Powhatan

I love this family and have for a long time now, and I feel Jamaal explained things very well. I love all involved as though they were my own family. Im deeply hurt by people wanting to judge or pass biased opinions without truly knowing anything about the people involved or the situation. Its not necessary to attempt to take a side, this is a family. It doesnt matter that the mother is my best friend, it doesnt matter that I love “the boy” like my own, nor does it matter that Tony was one of the first people from Powhatan I ever met over 10 years ago. They have all been through something and everyone is feeling the impact of what has happened. It is a tragedy, not a time to personally attack the character of the deceased, not a chance to attack the personal life of the childs mother, and not a time to try and point a finger at who to blame. Things happen in life good and bad that effect people for the rest of their lives, wise people learn from them so that the same mistakes are not ever repeated. Fools talk about it today, and forget about it tomorrow. Im keeping you all in my prayers during this time. Remember I love you guys, and I will always be here now and later for all of you..
