A jury trial got underway this morning for two Powhatan men charged with murder, aggravated malicious wounding and attempted murder, in relation to a June 24, 2008 incident in Powhatan County.

Cousins and codefendants Ethan Scott Parrish, 25, and Joseph Lee Parrish Jr., 18, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, including first degree murder for the shooting death of Powhatan High School student Tahliek Taliaferro.

Lawyers made opening statements this afternoon after four hours of jury selection and the Commonwealth called its first two witnesses, Lieutenant Detective Kevin Wolfe and Detective Jason Tackett, both of the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office.

Jurors heard the detectives’ descriptions of the two crime scenes, one on Dorset Road and the other in the Loch Gate subdivision in Powhatan.

Wolfe testified he retrieved six 7.62 round shell casings in a driveway on Dorset Road., a mile and a half south of Route 60. The shots were fired, according to testimony, by Ethan Parrish from a semiautomatic Mac 90, “a military style assault rifle,” according to the defense. Four of the shots struck the vehicle Taliaferro and three friends were riding in. Taliaferro was struck in the head and killed, and Courtney Jones, another passenger, was wounded by a shot to the lower back. All bullets entered through the back of the car.

According to evidence, the shooting was precipitated by a verbal altercation between the Parrish cousins and Taliaferro and five of his friends, at the Sheetz in Powhatan. Taliaferro and his friends followed Ethan and Joey Parrish down Dorset Road after Joey Parrish gave Taliaferro a directive to follow them to finish the fight.

Investigators found a pistol bb gun at Taliaferro’s feet at the Loch Gate crime scene and the defense is posturing to make a case for self defense. Baseball bats were also found in the victims’ cars.

In addition to first degree murder, the cousins are charged with aggravated malicious wounding for the bullet that struck Courtney Jones, as well as two counts of attempted murder, for the shots fired at Lawrence Harris and Tommy Williams; all three were in the car with Taliaferro at the time he was shot.

The trial resumes tomorrow morning at nine a.m.

I live about 15 minutes away from where this all happened and it bothers me that such things are capable by human beings. Brutal murder and such blatant acts of harm should be not tolerated. These boys deserve to go to jail for a long, long time, if not rot in there. I know the situation got out of hand, but was Tahliek going around looking to kill somebody? Was he driving around looking for someone to kill with an illegal weapon? It saddens em to know that humanity is capable of such horrors

MANSLAUGHTER, INVOLUNTARY - In order for a person to be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter the government must prove that someone was killed as a result of an act by the person;

Second, in the circumstances existing at the time, the person’s act either was by its nature dangerous to human life or was done with reckless disregard for human life; and

Third, the person either knew that such conduct was a threat to the lives of others or knew of circumstances that would reasonably cause the person to foresee that such conduct might be a threat to the lives of others.

Involuntary Manslaughter???  When someone fires multiple shots into an occupied vehicle???  I THINK NOT!!  Voluntary manslaughter should be the most lenient sentence.  If it’s legal, I think the judge might consider overturning the verdict & issue a more appropriate sentence.

POWHATAN; It is a shame that in this day and time; time for change and finally realizing that we are all human being no matter what color? I don;t see it here in your so perfect town. Up to 10 years for killing a child with a SEMI AUTOMATIC RIFLE,oh and let’s not forget the 83 DRUM CLIP! 24 years old and he killed a CHILD i don’t care what the circumstances where, he is an adult and imagine if he had came to his cousins rescue would there had been death? But you in powhatan did not see that, but you saw he has a 3 year old that needs to be taken care of! Ha! of course why not teach the 3 old to shoot to scare people if your TEENAGE COUSIN GETS INTO A HIGHSCHOOL RIVAVLRY WITH OTHER TEENAGERS WITH NO GUNS. I feel truly sorry for Taliaferro Family my heart and prayers will forever be there for them as well as the Jones Kid I will continue to pray. Justice was not served here and the jurors know it
Parrish family knows it and so does powhatan and now the WHOLE WORLD KNOWS! AND ABOUT THIS I WONDER WHAT WOULD BE THE OUTCOME HAD THE SHOE BEEN ON THE OTHER FOOT? SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT HUH? I hope i never get stranded in your hometown for anything. and i promise you VIRGINIA IS NOT HAPPY. I mean come on people right is right and wrong is wrong. The shooter gets up to 10 yrs., the girl gets nothin and Joey may get something. It’s sad . Powhatan we just voted you know Barak Obama, the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. oh i forgot how would you remember, “up to 10 years” for killing a BLACK TEENAGER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AND INJURYING ANOTHER FOR LIFE, SCARE 2 MORE FOREVER, I guess you powhatan forgot to vote Huh?

ptown resident, I realize it is not a crime to carry baseball bats and bb guns, using them to threaten or harm is.  The point of my post was that you shouldn’t make judgements before you’ve heard all of the facts.  If a community is willing to convict before a trial, why have a trial in the first place.

to just a nobody.  It’s not a crime to carry baseball bats or bb guns.  It is a crime to carry an semi automatic rifles.  they don’t just drop out of the sky, I doubt stephanie was driving around with it in her car.  Ethan and or Joey brought it with them.  Yes it was a situation that got out of hand, but those boys were playing basketball and then getting ice cream.  doesn’t sound to me like someone driving around with an assault rifle looking for trouble.  the parrishes and stephanie, they waited, watched, ambushed and murdered.  Beginning and end of story

. i just dont understand why stephanie isnt being charged. and what bothers me the most, is that the people who helped them with there get away will more than likely do more time than stephanie if she does any. this just shows me that to get through life its about who you know.point blank period stephanie should be charged and be doin some time right with those boys. i jus find it real fishy that the boys are spotlighted for this whole crime when they had another accomplice stephanie reynolds. so my powhatan people what are we going to do about it. if nothing i think this young lady who is serving 18 years should be realeasde for a very similar crime in richmond. i cant remember the young lady name and i am not an investigator but someone else please compare the byrd park murder with this one and let the public know the difference

I don’t care who you are, you do not deserve to be murdered like that.  It’s sick, and even if the Parish boys feel bad for it now, it does not matter.  They deserve time for what they did.  They shot at the car and all of the boys in the car could have been killed.  I know all of the guys riding with Tahliek, if someone tells you to follow them and fight just after a verbal conflict to fire you up… you are going to go and that is what they did.  Nothing like this has happened in Powhatan before, and it was just a very very sad summer in Powhatan.  I just pray for all involved, because they are reliving the worst day of there young lives.
God Bless
