Police were called to Powhatan’s Flat Rock Elementary School this morning after school officials reportedly received a phone call indicating there was a weapon in the building.

According to Powhatan County Schools Information Officer Michele Wilson, the call was received this morning as students were beginning to arrive at the school.

Wilson said that once the call was received all students already in the school were directed to a safe location in the building and the school was immediately locked down. Students who had not yet gotten off the buses remained on them.

Once police arrived, they were able to determine that the call had come from a student on one of the buses using a cell phone.

A search of the building revealed no weapons, and Wilson said the matter is now being handled as a “student discipline issue.”

The last thing the school needed was the parents of 666 students calling or showing up, creating a completely new situation to deal with on top of a threat with a potential weapon on site. Had this been a real emergency, with real weapons, all staff would need to focus on the safety of the students, securing the building, preventing tragedy instead of making phone calls and then dealing with the onslaught of increased attention. The child probably thought that they would get to stay out of school for the day. I don’t think kids under 10 should have a cell phone at school as they aren’t mature enough to use it properly.

Simply astonishing….I hope the school disciplines this child to the fullest extent, I really don’t care how old they are.  Be sure the other children realize what kind of trouble they could get into if they do stuff like this. Ban a cell phone from this child alone, to emphasize to the other kids what they too could lose. This child’s parents must be really proud. I pray this child gets a little home discipline too!

And just how do you think they would have notified the parents of 666 students at 9am this morning without causing unnecessary panic and disruption to the school day?  Seriously?  Parents were notified with a note home with their children.  I think it was handled wonderfully.  This was a touchy situation and administration made the choices needed to keep your child safe—you should be thankful!
