By 2:45 last Saturday, there were few parking spaces to be found in the lot at Powhatan Community Church. Despite bitter temperatures and an unrelenting icy drizzle outside, residents continued filing into the church, filling row upon row.

They were there to honor former Powhatan County Supervisor Bob Cosby, and honor him they did. Among those in attendance were family members and close friends, as well as a Senator, a Delegate, and the entire choir of Little Zion Baptist church. Former and current county supervisors praised him for his dedicated service and a parade of young children regaled him with poems and songs. Governor Bob McDonnell sent his congratulations via a taped video message, as did Congressman Randy Forbes and Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling.

Cosby, who officially retired from the board on Dec. 31, 2011 after 40 years of service, was even pulled up on stage to sing a song with several former classmates from the Powhatan High School class of 1955.

Offering his thoughts on Cosby’s tenure, Senator John Watkins echoed what many in the community have been saying to Cosby since he announced last year that he would retire.

“It has been a honor and a privilege to work with someone whose name is synonymous with Powhatan County,” said Watkins, a Powhatan resident himself. “Thank you for your service, thank you for your time, and thank you for your dedication to the people of Powhatan County.” — Roslyn Ryan
