Former Powhatan school board member pleads guilty to drug distribution

The Powhatan Sheriff’s Office used a confidential informant and video-recording equipment last year to arrest a man for cocaine distribution.

Germando L. Harris, 52, pleaded guilty April 6 to two counts of distributing cocaine. Harris served on the Powhatan County school board for 11 years and was twice elected board chairman by his fellow school board members.

He was charged in 2008 with possession of cocaine, but the case against him ended in a mistrial. He later pleaded no contest to a reduced misdemeanor charge and was given a suspended sentence.

The latest charges each carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. The court ordered a pre-sentencing report and Harris was allowed to remain free on bond ahead of a sentencing hearing.

of course nobody did anything - why would they.  in a county where they allow a deputy who got a DUI to remain a deputy and then be the SRO at the JR high!  nice.  what a joke.

Late in coming plus didn’t get what he deserved.
He was nasty at the grocery stores, probably worse at the Detention Centers.  I bet there is alot more under the table that is waiting to be devoured then set free.  So what’s the point often then not so called good works are just a mask.

I hope he can get the help he needs. My prayers go out to him and his family.  He was one of the nicest/most helpful school board memebers and there are not many on that board that shows any compasion.

This man needs help for drug abuse not prison.

There are likely more Drug dealers and users in positions of authority around our students.  One
vcu professor who taught me was openly a cocaine addict - everyone in the department knew and no one did anything!  He still works there!

Mr. Harris isn’t the only one smoking something - I think Joseph is too!  $100k?  Try $4,800 per year.

This is a shame.  I think that at one time Harris had the potential to be successful in life.  Of course, the loss of that potential is his own fault, but it’s still a shame.

Sirs:

Isn’t the court systems a strange thing (charged in 2008 with possession of cocaine, but the case against him ended in a mistrial. He later pleaded no contest to a reduced misdemeanor charge and was given a suspended sentence.) I just can’t believe that!
And to pay them that sort of money in this economy, and serve like that!
What is the county coming to? H_ll in a hand basket, just like the federal and states.
Thank you!

Does this surprise anyone? I bet you if you looked deeper into the general public this is common place. Look at the schools….if you think nothing is going on involving drugs in school, then you might as well have blinders on. More than likely this guy was a dealer to some. This is one of many, let’s keep up the good work S.O. Keep busting them!
