For the second year in a row, Powhatan’s World War II veterans will receive holiday gift bags courtesy of the Powhatan Women Republicans (POWR).

Volunteers and Cub Scouts will deliver to each of the county’s 27 World War II veterans bags stuffed with items ranging from Food Lion gift cards, stamps and warm socks to homemade baked goods and personalized greeting cards.

“It is important to remember and take care of our local heroes, and it is our hope that this small token of appreciation will bring smiles to their faces and fill them with the spirit and joy of the season,” said Tiffany Whitcomb, the project coordinator and a senior chief in the U.S. Navy.

Several other local groups have contributed time and resources to the effort: The Rotary Club of Powhatan donated $250 worth of Food Lion gift cards; the Powhatan Playgroup made the greeting cards; and the Powhatan Cub Scouts donated fleece blankets and will help delivery the bags.

“We are really excited about all the support and enthusiasm we’ve received this year,” said Whitcomb. “It is amazing to see all those who [are] giving of their time and money to help make this possible.”

Our Community is Amazing!  It’s the people of our county who have done all of the work…I’m just the messenger.  Thank you Powhatan for your open hearts and tremendous generosity!

We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Tiffany for coordinating the World War II veterans Christmas project for the Powhatan Women Republicans (POWR) this year.  This project is especially meaningful to us and we are honored to be able to recognize and remember our extraordinary World War II veterans again this year.  We are very appreciative of all those in the community who have stepped forward to make this effort so successful - thank you!

God Bless,
