Hanna now expected to affect county sooner By Roslyn Ryan
Sep 05, 2008 After a briefing from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management at approximately 11 a.m. today, Powhatan emergency management officials now say the heaviest impact from Hurricane Hanna may be felt tonight. Bailey said officials have had to revise their original assessment after the speed of the storm increased this morning. “Our heaviest impact is expected to occur from midnight tonight until 2 p.m. on Saturday,” said Powhatan Deputy Emergency Coordinator Dave Bailey in a memo released shortly after the briefing. Officials are still expecting heavy rain with 20 mph sustained winds and gusts of up to 40 mph. Rains and heavy winds are expected to subside by early evening on Saturday. The storm, which as of 8 a.m. this morning was still designated as a Tropical Storm, is now expected to make landfall near the border of North Carolina and South Carolina as a low category 1 hurricane.
