Virginia State Police are warning area motorists of increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints this Super Bowl Sunday.

“During a time of celebrating your pick for the Super Bowl, I want to emphasize the importance of driving safe and sober each and every time,” Capt. Steven Chumley, Virginia State Police Richmond Division Commander, said in a press release.

According to state police, 5,793 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in 2010 –
17 of the 76 fatal motor vehicle crashes were alcohol related compared to 16 of the 77 fatal crashes investigated in 2009.

“Any traffic death is one too many but a death attributed to drinking and driving is completely preventable,” said Chumley.
Motorists are encouraged to report suspected drunk drivers to state police by dialing #77 on their cellular phones.
