Klan leaflets sprinkle county overnight Published: April 01, 2009 By Michael Copley, Staff Writer Four page Ku Klux Klan information leaflets were left in driveways across the county over night. Earlier today, one internet poster wrote that they found a KKK newsletter in their driveway in the Red Lane Road area. That resident said the same material was left in neighbors’ driveways, and Detective Kevin Wolfe said the Sheriff’s Office has received a small number of reports from residents. The leaflet amounts to an information packet that touches on immigration issues, contains contact numbers, and offers statistics in support of the KKK’s platform. |

While leisurely reading my Powhatan Today, I came across the letter to the Editor, from Mr. R. Vaughan, President of the Powhatan Chapter of the NAACP. Amazing… Mr. Vaughan, how can you possibly compare the Virginia Beach case, in which 2 black men robbed someone, stole their Jeep, evaded police, recklessly endangered other lives by driving over a median into oncoming traffic, driving on suspended licenses, fleeing from police and then kicking and punching a police dog? Now, Mr. Vaughan, since I’m not sure if you have ANY knowledge of the law, but let me enlighten you just a little bit, if you are open to any kind of education. Injuring a police dog is the SAME thing as injuring a police officer. Police dogs are members of law enforcement, and are treated as such by the law. In addition, this individual was convicted on NUMEROUS other charges—some felonies. And Mr. Vaughan equates this as the same as the Taliaferro incident? There is NO comparison, absolutely NONE. This individual in Virginia Beach got off pretty easily, in my opinion, with all the charges he was convicted of. This just further proves my theory that Mr. Vaughan and the NAACP as a whole is nothing but a racist hate group. And it further proves the “woe is me” attitude that the NAACP fosters is alive and well…All the muck-raking the NAACP does is not productive, but only fosters the impression that the world owes the black man. No one owes them a thing. What you get in this world, you should earn, not be given just because something happened 150 years ago. And you shouldn’t be given preferential treatment because you yell the loudest, because of some perceived slight. It’s people like Mr. Vaughan that make my teeth grind, because he’s not only ill-informed and ignorant, he’s trying to spread the poison. He can’t let things lie..Well, Mr. Vaughan, you stir the pot, you smell the stink. The incident that happened with those boys was a sad lack of judgment on both parties. Mr. Taliaferro was no saint, even though he’s being portrayed as Mr. Wonderful. Nor was Joey Parrish, but there was long-standing history between them. This was not a race crime, unless you consider the time Mr. Taliaferro’s gang attacked those 2 white boys, nearly killing the one and leaving him with permanent brain damage. Did anyone march on that??? Did anyone wail and call in a White Rights Group? No..they didn’t… The NAACP can’t stand too much scrutiny. They are as much a hate group as the KKK. Race was never an issue in this case until the verdict came out and one side felt they were slighted. The protests began, Al (I’m a LIAR) Sharpton is supposed to rear his agitating holier than thou self upon his self imposed alter and the Rainbow coalition is to interject their thoughts on this grave injustice. The NAACP with their one sided agenda, as always. Who speaks for the family members who have been threatened with rape, murder and other various threats to their persons. Who stands up for them as they walk the guantlet from their vehicles to the courtroom and are spit on and verbally abused. Do the police arrest these perpetrators? No, why not? The Klan terrorists, I think not. I can think of a few folks who could do some soul searching. My conscience is clean, but yes we are watching. Bornhere of Powhatan, VA

So the NAACP and Taliaferro’s mom have a protest that included people from all over Virginia to express their opinion and that is okay, but the KKK putting out literature is NOT? Can you say DOUBLE STANDARD? Distribution of literature is a First Amendment right, protected by the Constitution of the United States, the highest law of the land. It has been upheld by the United States Supreme Court. It is NOT littering and it is 100% legal. If you do not like the content of the literature, contact the distributors and tell them and no more literature will grace your door. I certainly understand some people disagree with the KKK and that is certainly their right, protected by the same United States Constitution that protects literature distribution and the KKK. However, to say the NAACP has a right to protest and the Klan does not is 100% BS. Someone asked what they have against the NAACP and if they had done anything to them or their family. Well, can anyone here tell me what the KKK has done to them? I personally know of no violent acts the KKK has perpetrated. I do, however, know of many violent acts by blacks that the NAACP has defended, which makes them as guilty as the perpetrators, IMO. The NAACP is also guilty of economic extortion, and has NEVER discouraged blacks from rioting if they don’t get their way. I have also not ever heard of the NAACP defending White people that have been the victims of black crime or an unjust verdict. BTW, I see the Powhatan Today has FINALLY gotten around to putting an article in their paper about the White-on-White murder trial. Princess butterfly

I’ve read a few comments and felt compelled to add my thoughts or rather my wish list. I wish people would stop talking about racist, supremacy groups (i.e. KKK, confederate whatever they call themselves) as if they are protecting the ideals of America’s founding Fathers principles. They aren’t …the KKK/Confederates are terrorists (American home-grown terrorists) relics of an ugly past that most avoid talking about as if they all disappeared after the civil rights movement. But they do exist and growing in number every since the 2008 election. This newsletter distribution just puts it in the face of people who don’t have to worry about the KKK b/c we look like them. Unfortunately, the people who are targets are never able to forget. Klansmen manipulate and disguise themselves so you don’t recognize them and they could be living next door. It scares me. What’s more frightening is that people who aren’t racist don’t recognize them b/c they just see an average person, who cares for their family, works everyday, etc. when all the while they have a serial killer living next door. Second, I wish people would stop comparing NAACP to racist organizations—it’s ridiculous. The NAACP was founded by white’s because some of the so called “respected citizens” would get away with inhuman or criminal acts against people they considered inferior. The purpose of the NAACP is to fight for equality (social, political, education, employment) for minorities. I’m not sure how discrimination/affirmation action can be discussed in the same conversation as the KKK (a hate group). Nevertheless, there is legitimate reason to debate the nuances and complexities of affirmative action. But without telling the truth about the bloody history that made affirmative action necessary, we can hardly debate its finer points of application or abuse. Remember, minorities didn’t create the inequality in American. Finally, I wish everyone would assume responsibility for the poor state of race relationships. The real problem is our ego. We can’t admit that the problem lies at everyone’s feet. Because we aren’t racist, we quickly dismiss the possibly that race could’ve had an impact and assumes anyone that suggest it is using it as a crutch. Why can’t we show compassion to those who feel terrorized by KKK newsletters and acknowledge the trauma that these racist organizations has on minorities in our community and our country? As a community we should empathize, instead of pointing the finger at the person that feels victimized—saying take responsibility for your problem, accept it and move on b/c life’s not fair. It’s like putting a rape victim on trial as if she created her circumstances that resulted in the attack. Bornhere of Powhatan, VA

Friend…to answer your question as to if I have ever been discriminated against, I can honestly say I and my husband have both been. My husband had been passed over for a promotion that he was MORE qualified for than the black individual who received the promotion, and who was subsequently demoted within 6 months because he was not capable of fulfilling the job requirements. The Human Resources manager admitted that my husband was more qualified, but due to Affirmative Action and EEO regulations he was required to give the promotion to the black individual. Now, where is the sense in that?? Where is that fair? Where is that more productive for a company or organization? It’s not, and you know it. I experienced somewhat of the same issue, when I was in college, when I applied for an International Graduate Scholarship. 10 positions were available—-7 were given to blacks WITH LOWER GPAs and lower SAT scores? What’s the logic in that?? So, you can see I have been affected by reverse discrimination…I know of many others who have had similar experiences. As I have said in MANY of my posts, I don’t judge someone based on the colour of their skin. I base my opinions on how you deport yourself, what you’ve done with your life, and how you got there… chesterfieldst of chesterfield

As a long time teacher in the community, I agree with Sad that this tragic situation is the result of SERIOUS problems in our community, specifically our schools, which are not being adddressed. The drug use, especialy prescription drugs, is common at the high school yet the problem is not beng addressed. When students come to school high and teachers send them to the office they are simply sent back to class and there has not been one drug search of the school all year yet the drugs abound. There are rumors that students bring alcohol to school in water bottles and drink beer in the bathroom as well. The violence among the students has also increased, especially since the trial, but it is not a race issue, students are choosing a side based on who their freinds are and race IS NOT A FACTOR. There should be no sides because there are no winners, only victims. Gangs are also becoming more common, yet it is another issue we ignore, and one that is rapidly escalating. As citizen, parents, and role models, we owe it to our community and our children as well as to who all have suffered as a result of this tragedy to address these issues in our schools before we become just like Henrico and Chesterfield. Haven’t we suffered enough? Have we notlearned anything from all this pain? If we don’t act quickly our youth doesn’t stand a chance and neither does our community.
