Local Orchid aficionado will speak in South America
0 CommentsPublished: September 02, 2009 Contributed report Art Chadwick, President of Chadwick & Son Orchids, Inc., will present a lecture entitled ‘Large Flowered Cattleyas – An American Perspective’ at the 33rd Annual International Orchid Show of Colombia, November 20-22. The event, Caliorquideas 2009, features orchid exhibitions and seminars as well as field trips to see native orchids in the rainforest. Cattleyas, once known as the ‘Corsage Orchid’ in the United States, have recently become popular potted plants. “Orchids are the #1 houseplant today and Cattleyas are what every orchid hobbyist aspires to,” said Chadwick. He and his father are co-authors of the orchid reference book, The Classic Cattleyas, published by Timber Press. Chadwick will share details of the trip in his monthly orchid advice column in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He last spoke at the 2008 Australian Orchid Conference and the 2005 World Orchid Conference in France. Colombia is home to six naturally-occurring, large flowered Cattleya species, including the National Flower, C trianaei.
