New elementary school will open today

Better late than never.

The county’s newest school is opening today, according to Powhatan County Schools spokeswoman Michele Wilson, just two months after a delay in construction forced officials to push back the original September move-in date.

Flat Rock Elementary school, which is the county’s third elementary school, will serve students in pre-kindergarten through 4th grade who live in the Eastern portion of the county.

The school is the sixth educational facility in the county, and the first to be built since 2003, when Powhatan built the new high school on Judes Ferry Road.

Flat Rock Elementary is located at 2210 Batterson Rd, directly adjacent to the high school.

While the school was expected to be fully operational by today, officials have scheduled a dedication ceremony for Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.

The school’s name, which was chosen after an open call for suggestions, is an homage to the Flat Rock area of Powhatan. The area, and in turn the school, was named for a large rock that is believed to have been used in Native American ceremonies.

Would have been safer and smoother to open when the school was complete.
