Charges dropped against correctional center employee accused of aiding younger Parrish
20 CommentsPublished: April 17, 2009 By Michael Copley, Staff Writer The Commonwealth dropped all charges Friday, against a woman accused of sneaking a handcuff key to a prisoner. While working as a nurse at James River Juvenile Detention Center, Karen N. Peregoy came into contact with Joseph Lee Parrish Jr., an inmate, and was asked to smuggle him a key. Among other charges, Parrish was there awaiting trial for murder and malicious wounding in connection to the June 2008 shooting death of 18-year-old Tahliek Taliaferro. In statements to investigators, Peregoy said Parrish coerced her into helping him by making threats on behalf of the Pagans, a motorcycle gang he claimed association with. Peregoy, of Sandy Hook, Va., told investigators she bought the handcuff key on the internet. “Google it,” Detective Kevin Wolfe told the court in August. “You can get [a handcuff key] right on the internet.” According to August testimony, prison officials “found the key on the floor of the pod with [Parrish’s] other personal effects,” said Wolfe. Wolfe said officials also found a letter Parrish wrote outlining an escape plan, complete with plans for a cell phone to be located outside the facility. Friday’s hearing lasted less than two minutes and afterwards defense attorney Don Denton said his client had no comment on the case. Related Story: Police: nurse gave teen prisoner a key |

Chesterfieldst, Well this should give you a bigger laugh. You don’t know me. I happen to be a relative of someone who was an actual Invader many moons ago. I was in the courtroom the day she was arraigned on this charge and present for Joey’s hearing on Beaumont’s request to move him to an adult facility. I can’t help but wonder was she really afraid of his claims or was she infatuated with him? Did she think he was innocent and wanted to help him out? That what makes dropping these charges a crock. It’s not on her record and she’s free to get a job at another correctional facility if she chooses. I’m disappointed that there is really no accountability on her part (yea, she lost her job). Did she deserve jail time? Maybe, maybe not, but a conviction on her record may have kept her from getting a job at another correctional facility.

Another Powhatan Resident… I never said the Pagans were not around, I said I had not heard about them in a long time. As far as researching.. it seems they would not go after a nurse for keeping this lil punk behind bars. This is not their thing. I do try and stick to the facts. I know a lot of people and can get the information if I cannot find it online as far as court records and so on.

Chesterfieldst, Is this your full time job? You are on every article on every other post. You seem to have an answer for everything and claim to know “people” and/or something about every comment someone makes. At first your posts seemed to be geniune and factual. The more I read them, the less credible you seem and it appears you comment in an effort to keep things stirred up. I think HD might be right. Joey didn’t make up the Pagans. They do exist. They may not be as notorious as once claimed, but I am sure there are some old dogs still around. You said you asked someone this weekend how bad they used to be. Well did you ask a Pagan, one of the Invaders, a cop, a judge, a detective that had some involvement with them or one of your friends at a cookout? Now were Joey’s claims true? Probably not, but what made her afraid of his threats if the Pagans are not around or were not dangerous back in the day? If you are suggesting HD learn how to use the internet to obtain information, let me be the first to tell you the internet is not a reliable source of information. You cannot believe most of what you read there.
