Open burning regulations for Powhatan County

Contributed Report

Jan 31, 2008

In December of 2007, the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors adopted a Fire Code ordinance. The following section of the ordinance pertains to open burning in the county:

Residents of Powhatan County are limited to burning a pile of debris waste no larger than 8 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet or 256 cubic feet.

Burn must be conducted at least 100 feet from any structure on adjoining property.

Burn must be attended at all times and a means of extinguishing the fire must be on hand.

Property zoned A (Agricultural) is exempt from the pile size requirement.

All properties other than those zoned R (residential) in a registered subdivision may obtain a burn permit good for 30 days for piles larger than the 256 cubic feet. Those permits cost $100 and are available at the Powhatan Building inspections office.

All state burning regulations supersede the local Ordinance.
