Parks and Rec has new emblem Published: July 01, 2009 By Richard Carrier, Contributing Writer The new Powhatan County Parks and Recreation Department now has its logo. Ryan Murphy’s entry, depicting a stylized parent and a child running through the sun across a map of the county, was selected from the final five entries. The contest for Parks and Rec’s first logo, requesting entries from all residents and business in the county, kicked off in March. “There was really great input and interaction from the county’s citizens,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Myers. “It was a lot or fun.” In May, twelve selected semi-finalists were offered for citizen voting on the county website with the county’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee also voting to pare the entries down to the final five. The final selection vote was close, according to Myers, with only 12 votes separating Murphy’s winning entry from second place finisher Ken Malczak. “I liked all five of the final selections, “ Myers said, “but the top three kind of separated themselves from the rest.” “I took the logo contest seriously instead of trying to design an official emblem,” Murphy said. “I hope it will be the symbol for fun in the county and I hope that those who preferred a more formal, detailed looking seal will come to appreciate it.” |
