Relay For Life

Pocahontas Elementary students raising money to fight cancer

Contributed report

Apr 30, 2008

Pocahontas Elementary students are joining in the fight against cancer by raising money and walking the school track on Friday, May 9th, beginning at 9:30.

Pocahontas students are holding a “Mini-Relay,” which is an abbreviated version of the American Cancer Society’s national signature activity, Relay For Life.

Students will be collecting money from the end of April through the middle of May and will walk the track for one class period.

It’s a great opportunity for the students to make an impact in the community as well as become knowledgeable about cancer.  The students feel good about themselves knowing they are doing something to help others.

The Mini-Relay will be an all-day event, complete with music from Dynamic DJ (Jamie Timberlake), refreshments, and decorations.

All money raised by the Pocahontas students will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

We are inviting members of the community who are Cancer Survivors (all types of cancer) to join us for a special ceremony on that day at 9:15.

We would also like for them to wear purple if possible, so that they may be easily recognized.

The Relay For Life of Powhatan will take place on Friday, May 30, 2008 at Powhatan Junior High School at 6:00 pm.

Powhatan’s Relay for Life is considered to be one of the best in the nation per capita for raising money for the American Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer.  The money raised by the Pocahontas students will be donated to the Relay For Life of Powhatan.

If you have any questions about this event please contact Carol Beach, 4th Grade Teacher & Mini-Relay Coordinator via email or by calling the school at 598-5717.
