Powhatan BOS unanimously approves appointing Bustos to District 2 seat Published: October 15, 2009 By Michael Copley The Powhatan Board of Supervisors voted unanimously last night to appoint Marsell Bustos to fill the vacant District 2 seat on the BOS. That position was left open after Supervisor Charlie Green died October 2. Bustos, 50, was chosen from four candidates October 7 during a closed BOS session. Powhatan County Attorney John Rick assured residents at the October 14 meeting that all state laws had been followed during the board’s selection process, but some residents were still upset by what they labelled back-door, Chicago-style politics. Todd Rojcewicz said the decision was inappropriately made by the board without input from residents in the second district. He asked the board to reconsider its decision, calling for “robust debate” and an open interview process. “If Bustos is the best candidate after an open process, then he will have the full suppport of the county.” And Jason Moore said the board “Rushed to judgement in 10 days.” According to Virginia Law, the BOS had 45 days from Mr. Green’s death October 2 to fill the position. Moore asked the board to rethink the process quoting, he said, BOS Chairman Bob Cosby. “The county has been here for 200 years. It will be here tomorrow. Let’s take our time and do this right.” But the board was unmoved by residents’ comments and seemed indignant at claims it mishandled selecting Mr. Greens replacement. Moore felt due consideration was not given to residents’ concerns voiced during the public comment period October 14. District 5 Supervisor Carson Tucker said board members felt they needed to get “back up and running with the board facing a plethora of issues. [We] need all hands on deck.” And he said a major factor in the board’s decision was “Who right now can hit the ground running.” And addressing the call for an open interview process, Tucker said the board was simply “not going to vet those candidates’ strengths and weaknesses and our personal opinions about them” publicly. “That was the process we chose, whether you like it or not.” Bustos started work this morning, October 15, when he reportedly travelled with County Administrator Carolyn Cios to Powhatan correctional facilities. Asked if he would run in the District 2 special election, now planned for November 2010, Bustos told the Richmond Times-Dispatch it was too early to tell. “If another Charlie Green comes out of the woodwork, I’m probably going to have to give it a hard look.” |

Concerned Parent: Not sure where you are gathering your info. Have you really spoken to parents who say they base their decisions on Glenn Beck’s opinions? I have not met a single one! Glad you mentioned opinion vs. slander/libel. What DO you call it when 3 public officals have their names hanging above and below name calling on a local website (and solely because they were believed to be members of a particular party)... whereby conversations took place and two others were able to have their photos removed? You don’t have to be a lawyer by trade to know it’s hateful and plain and simply wrong. Anyone who had anything to do with it’s creation, or who allowed the defaming threads to remain, should be held accountable. In my opnion. You mention you have been ‘thinking’ and ‘wondering’ ...why not better utilize your time by fact gathering or asking direct questions so you can get direct answers? Concerned Parent

I agree with your opinion that there are “Kool-Aid sucking lemmings,” but on both sides of the equation. Anyone who makes a decision based on someone else’s opinion could very well be deemed a lemming. When Glenn Beck tells listeners that Obama is going to indoctrinate students with a socialist agenda, and parents make decisions based on Glenn Becks’ opinion, those parents are “un-informed.” As far as your opinion about someone who comes across as “a hot-head illiterate,” I often wonder how often hot-headed, emotionally driven people confuse opinion with slander, or in the case of written words, libel. Mr. Jason Moore is a lawyer by trade, and he seems to know the difference between opinion and slander. I wonder how often his colleagues consult with him on a variety of legal issues related to free speech. Bornhere of Powhatan

Wow….First of all..Let me say how all this appears to me… Mrs. Ownby comes across as a hot-head illiterate. Her arguments are apparently fueled by the Kool-Aid drinking mentality of the Democrats. It’s OK to be un-informed…And it’s OK to voice your opinion—-but don’t remove all doubt of your ignorance by proving it with ill-thought out statements. Debbie Jones has been a very open, transparent School Board member, which is FAR more than can be said for our Board of Supervisors. I wonder just who’s in who’s pocket here??? Mr. Walton—-how much is Walmart paying you for your acquiesence?? Mr. Cosby?? How much are you getting?? Farming’s not bringing much these days, is it?? You’ve sold our county out, now you’ve sold us out. Todd R has been repeatedly slated—for no reason..He is a tax-paying citizen who dares to speak his mind and exercise his (now dwindling) Constitutional rights. He has been attacked for his picture on his Facebook profile…Why?? Because the man dares to shot a rifle?? He is a former Marine, for God’s sake.. Lisa M puts forth good, well-thought out, intuitive arguments. She is clearly well informed with facts. This country was founded on the principles of freedom, of government transparency..But now, thanks to those Kool-Aid sucking lemmings who swallowed Obama’s empty promises, we are losing more freedoms EVERY day. Every day bills are passed that we know NOTHING about. We as citizens need to put an end to this. It’s not a partisan thing—it’s an AMERICAN thing. And, if you don’t like America and what she stands for, might I offer you the opportunity to take your need for socialism to a country that embraces it? It’s acts like the BOS pulled that just underlines the fact we as Americans are losing personal freedoms.. Concerned Parent

Not to change the subject, but I’ve been thinking about the school board’s support to delay President Obama’s speech last month and subsequent requirement of permission slips. I can’t attend all school board meetings, so I didn’t have an opportunity to go before the school board and voice my concerns when they had their public hearing about whether or not to support Dr. Meara’s decision on the matter. I know that other parents voiced their concerns to school board members during that public meeting, with much success. I’m glad the school board does things differently than the board of supervisors. Yes, you are exactly right. He was selected not elected, because this unique situation calls for an appointment, not an election. Darrell Griffin

Ms. Ownby No bait out there.I laid out some sincere points, I also find the silence on your group’s activities concerning veterans deafening. Apparently you also find that Vets paying their own mediacl bills for injuries sustained fighting for this country acceptable as well. I also find it ironic that in one post you ARE whining about being offended, insulted, etc. etc. etc. Then in your very next post you say it comes with the territory if you are in politics. Which is it ? As I have stated several times, be CONSISTENT. You actually prove my point for me. That you apply one standard to others, yet when something comes at you or one of your officials (and with no where NEAR the level of venom), you are “offended” or “insulted” at the slightest thing. You can’t have it both ways. This is the same old Dem playbook. Say whatever you like and WHINE about free speech when it suits you. Get indignant, “offended”, or “insulted” when you hear something you don’t like. Personalize the argument and ignore the points of the debate rather than address them on their merits because your arguments are weak when based on the FACTS. The “process” that placed Mr. Bustos in that seat is the central issue here. YES, some folks (myself included) take issue with the partisan aspect of that considering the realities of the constituency; however, the MAIN reason that it is found objectionable is because of the process. You spend a great deal of time promoting your “guy”, I respect that, I truly do. I have no doubt if the board had been more transparent or had slightly modified the sequence by which they did this, you would not be having these conversations. Sure, there would be partisan anger and frustration, but that can be addressed in the usual manner by competing in the arena of ideas and winning elections. In a time where trust in government and specifically politicians of both parties is at an all time low; the LAST thing that to do is a backroom, closed door appointment to select ANY candidate. The fact remains that Mr. Bustos at the end of the day was “Selected, not Elected”....sound familiar ? Debbie Jones

Ms. Ownby, You are correct that name calling often comes with holding office and I am accustomed to having disagreements, vigorous discussion, and yes, even being called a choice name from time to time. My disregard was for having my picture placed on the blog with a thread about “filthy republicans” ONLY because I was a republican. All of the board members took the same stance on an issue but only those presumed to be republican were posted on the site. I don’t hide my conservatism as it represents a value system I hold dearly. I retain my right to speak up as a citizen and to defend myself when inaccurately or falsely portrayed and that is what I have done. I do not take issue with anyone solely based upon their political affiliation. My parents have been life-long Democrats and certainly hold a high place of honor in my eyes. I spoke out on this issue as a matter of principle - nothing more or nothing less. With sincere regards, Debbie Todd Rojcewicz of Powhatan

We can call each other names all we want, but he Dirty “Deeds” have been done. Ths process was a sham. Joe Walton wanted to ” approximate democracy”. Carson Tucker ” That was the process we chose, whether you like it or not”. Well, I DONT like it and neither so many of the citizens of Powhatan. No matter that Joe Walton beleives that WE[ the BOS] are THE decision maker in Powhatan”. Sorry Joe, Bob, Scott, Marsell and Carson, We the people are the ” decision maker” in Powhatan, and the time is coming and we are COMING FOR YOU in 2011, Sic Semper Tyranous A. Ownby of Powhatan
