The Sheriff’s Office warns all residents to keep their homes locked and said homeowners should not allow individuals they do not know into their houses.

Last week a number of county homes were broken into and robbed during daylight hours while the homeowners were away.

On Aug. 4 at approximately 5 p.m., a man entered the home of an elderly couple in the western end of the county. He told the couple he was a family friend.

He distracted the couple with conversation and a second individual entered the home while the first showed the couple carpet samples.

That second individual searched the home while the couple’s line of sight was blocked by the carpet sample and after the men left, the couple noticed a significant amount of money had been taken from the home.

The two suspects were traveling in a newer model, black, regularly sized pick-up truck and both are described as clean-shaven white males.

The first individual who entered the house- identified by authorities as “the talker,” is in his late 40’s and approximately 5’5” tall with a thin build. He was wearing jeans, a white t-shirt, black pointed cowboy boots and a baseball hat with a white patch logo on the front.

The second man is approximately 35 years old, between 6’ and 6’2” and had on tan shorts and a yellow or tan t-shirt.

The Sheriff’s Office has asked “all citizens to be aware of this situation and to use careful judgment when allowing anyone to enter their home, even if they are called by their names.

“Screened doors should be locked from the inside if homeowners choose to leave their exterior doors open.”

Residents should be on the lookout for suspicious people and vehicles in their neighborhoods, and report any unusual vehicles — noting the best possible description, license plates are always the best — or activity to the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office at 598-5652.

Please don’t get made at me. But I agree I should be able defend my property and family on my property. The police force can not be every where but I read one person comment and she is correct the deputies need to travel all the miles in there domain. If it takes longer for the staffing that they have they need to tell the people/Tax payers why and the people need to tell the board and the board need to adjust spending or increase taxes to adjust for extra safety. Now for qhgirl you need to grow up! You yourself must be a law breaker if you are faulting the deputies for doing what they are suppose to do and make roads safer because idiots believe that giving tickets is wrong and I guess you also believe that Deputies should not chase crimminals! I hope that your house and maybe someone you know does not get hit by someone who trying to avoid a ticket because they were being stopped on route 60. Stupid is as stupid does! People amaze me sometimes when they actually believe that they are right! Cumberland just got 24 hour police protection two years ago. I believe that there are to many frivolous law suits. If a crimminal get hurt on my house after he breaks a window and crawl in and steps on a board with rusty nail that was on the floor because i was remodeling it my fault! NOT but that our justice system because of liberals liberal liberals, Crimminals get cable TV, three great meals, work out, library books, etc. Kids in rural areas don’t get books, Kids in neighborhoods are over weight because they can’t get to a gym you see a pattern that should be reverse. Stop rewarding those in prison and punish those who want to do better.

they have their hands tied also. listen to the news. cops do the job they are hired to do and they get screwed, they dont they get screwed. Just last week people complained they ran radar and now they are not seen enough. If you have a person in your house it is in your hands….do what needs to be done. Call them and let them clean up the mess.

Your damm right im bitching my tax dollars pay thier sallary! Plus if someone is comming around breaking in and I take matters into my own hands I will be the one charged with putting them into a early grave, So why should I or anyone one else pay thier salary If i have to to do thier job by taking matters into our own hand, So a lazy fat ass can sit and eat donuts instead of making a few passes through my nieborhood. I dont think so!

Well it was mighty nice of the sheriff’s office to inform us of what is going on. However I think a better thing to do is maybe beef up patrols. I live in the Holly hills area and Im lucky if I seen a deputy drive threw maybe three times in the past 6 months it would be nice to see them drive threw more and maybe get aqainted with the resident more. I mean that is why we pay our taxes to be safe.
