The facilities supervisor for the Powhatan County school system fell from a ladder at Flat Rock Elementary School and died Friday of an apparent heart attack, authorities said.

Chuck DeNoon was in a room next to the school’s library Friday morning attempting to disable a light sensor in the ceiling, school officials said. Staff members in the library heard a noise and when they went to check, they discovered DeNoon had fallen from the ladder.

School employees called 911 and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The state medical examiner’s office has determined that DeNoon, 59, died of a heart attack, Powhatan Undersheriff Chris DeHart said.

“It was a sad day for our schools and the community,” School Superintendent Margaret S. Meara said. “Chuck was a wonderful, giving man. He was highly skilled in his work as facilities supervisor. His knowledge was vast, and he was the most dedicated employee that I have ever seen. He would do anything for anybody and had the best, most positive attitude.”

A funeral will be held at Powhatan High School tomorrow, Wednesday, at 5 p.m. Burial will be Thursday.

My condolences go out to this family. Losing a family member is always difficult but around the holidays is doubly painful.  All parents were notified Friday via a letter sent home with the students of the accident and that an employee had died on the job.  We were told the situation was under investigation.  Last night at the third grade Christmas play, Mr. DeNoon was to have received a certificate for his service to the schools.  He was asked by the PTO to be there prior to everything happening.  The school play was dedicated to him.  I hope the family the best in dealing with this loss.

The reason the High School is used is because it’s the largest auditorium in the county, and the room that will accomodate the most people. They are also able to televise the survice to an overflow crowd in the cafateria. There really isn’t a conspirsy at work here. My condolences go out to the family of this fine man. Powhatan has lost another pillar of our community.

Sorry for the loss. However, my comment has to do with, why do we mourn our dead in a High School???? Realize it is also a part time Church on Sundays. However, seems a little off. It should be a high school not a funeral home. Are there no funeral homes in this town willing to honor those lost. Something is not right with this.

Why did this story of the death of a worker at Powhatan schools not make the local news until Monday?  He died on the job on Friday and the first news report was not until Monday.  That seems strange to me.
