Powhatan’s E. Floyd Yates dies at 107 Published: September 01, 2010 By Michael Copley Ellwood Floyd (E. Floyd) Yates, a businessman, public servant and a fixture in the community in Powhatan for 83 years, died August 31 at the age of 107. Mr. Yates moved to Powhatan in 1927 and opened Yates Motor Company. He went on to start an oil company and a lumber business. He was on the board of supervisors during the Depression, the county’s draft board during World War II and he served as a substitute judge in the circuit court. From 1939 until 1952, Mr. Yates represented Powhatan, Chesterfield and Colonial Heights in the House of Delegates, and he served as chairman of the State Democratic Party. He was a member of the Virginia Game Commission, the Virginia Forestry Association, the Virginia Wildlife Federation and the Virginia Conservation and Economic Development Board. In 2003, the House of Delegates passed a resolution naming part of the state park in Powhatan after him. “He loved his county and his state, and he loved nature,” said Robert Cosby, chairman of the board of supervisors. “He was a respected southern gentleman and a statesman,” he said. “I can’t say enough great things about him. He was one of the most outstanding men I’ve ever known.” “The sense of community that is this place starts with people like Mr. Yates,” said Carolyn Bishop, county administrator. “He made you feel good about living here.” “His passing marks a change in Powhatan. It’s the end of an era,” she said. “He was always Mr. Yates,” said Mr. Cosby. “He was a cut above.” Richard Carrier contributed to this report. My Great Uncle Floyd passed away in his 108th year coming. He was the eldest 33 Degree mason ever. He was a Christian, American, Virginian, Conservationist, Naturalist, honest and loved all. This man is/was my hero and mentor. This is what we all have to measure up to too. God speed to him and all the family, friends and people who knew and know of this Virginian Gentleman Folk Hero! Mr. Yates was a wonderful inspiration. I not only had the pleasure of being on his long list of friends, but also the pleasure to know his family. My heart is breaking for all of us who have lost this courageous southern gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. He will be so missed. Love, Peka Nick and Debbie Elam of Powhatan

Our sincere sympathy to Elwood and his family. From the entire Elam Family, please know his family will be remembered at one of the “Original” families of Powhatan. I know Mr. Yates must have been a great man to have such a wonderful son like Elwood. Our thoughts and prayers are with you! Joann Pearman of Powhatan

It IS a sad day in Powhatan County. I feel for those who never met him and those who never will. My life is bessed because I did. What a gracious gentleman. Sarah

Though I never met him, I can remember my grandfather speaking about Mr. Yates extremely fondly. I know he’ll be sorely missed by the entire community. :( Submit Your Comments Below |
