Residents warned to lock cars after rash of break-ins
Published: October 01, 2008

The Sheriff’s Office says thieves, suspected to be juveniles, are responsible for a week-and-a-half-long rash of vehicle break-ins. Investigators have yet to establish tangible leads, but say the nature of the break-ins and the items stolen paint a picture of the perpetrators.

“Whoever is doing this is just walking up to cars and checking to see if the doors are unlocked, there’s no forced entry” said Det. Jeff Searfoss. “And they’re stealing sunglasses, ipods, cash, GPS systems, and even a skateboard.”

Investigators say neighborhood youths are most likely responsible.

“No one would take much notice of kids they see around all the time,” said Searfoss. “I don’t think we’re dealing with crusaders from Richmond.”

The thefts are centered in the Maple Grove and Spencer Wood subdivisions in the Three Bridge Rd area. The Sheriff’s Office was hesitant to say how many reports they have received “because the number just keeps growing,” said Searfoss.

“Please lock your cars. It’s a shame people have to, but in this case they need to.”

Yes, it is a shame that some people cant leave other peoples things alone. OK, this may be an act by youthful stupidity. But it is not acceptable behaviour!

It is depressing.

Hi everyone. I found this surfing around! One thing I learned about “punks” is that a barking dog will make them quickly bypass your property. I know it can be annoying but I’ve had great luck.

I am a resident of this area and will be on the lookout for any suspicous activities. I live down a long driveway and have a Rotweiler who is a very good watch dog. If anyone comes up my driveway I will go out with my phone to investigate and call 911 imediately. Hopefully all our neighbors will be on the look out for these “kids” or who ever they are. We need to keep our neighborhoods safe!! And everyone has to be on the look out for this and keep their Vehicles locked..

I live in that area, in the last year we have had grafitti sprayed on the roads, road signs painted or destroyed, trees cut down from people’s yards.  Of course no one knows who did it.
In Virginia we have the right to defend our property and I am sure that those repsonsible for the thefts and vandalism will one day be caught by the wrong person.  I hope for the sake of the community it is not our children that pay the ultimate price for these acts.
