A Richmond man whose fingerprint was found on the rearview mirror of a stolen car in Powhatan agreed to a plea bargain with the commonwealth that sends him to prison for a little more than a year.

21-year-old Thomas Reed Roberts maintained his innocence during a preliminary hearing in Powhatan District Court, and his lawyer, Anastasia K. Jones, argued a single fingerprint couldn’t prove her client stole the vehicle. Roberts was charged with grand larceny of an automobile.

The car was stolen Sept. 2 from a residence on Indian Pipe Court and left in a field on Judes Ferry Road. Roberts reportedly told Chesterfield investigators he was in Powhatan around the date the car was stolen.

Under the plea deal, Roberts accepted responsibility for stealing the car and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Richard Cox recommended Roberts spend a year and two months in prison, with three years and 10 months of a five-year sentence suspended.

Brilliantly put: “Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Richard Cox recommended Roberts spend a year and two months in prison” I told this to the guys at work today and they all laughed. Did he at least try to steal a nice Roadtrek class b or did he settle for a Toyota? Sometimes I can’t believe these people, one year in jail before he turns 22, that makes a poor impression on any portfolio.

Thank you Sheriff Department of Powhatan

The people of Powhatan should be greatful for the staff of the Powhatan Sheriff’s Department.  Since when is it OK for someone to steal a car or break into a home or steal money from a business?  Stealing is stealing just as thieft is thieft.  Those who are lowly enough to steal, deserve to be in jail and have to pay back what they took plus interest.  Maybe if we made it uncomfortable for them, they would straighten up and stop stealing.  It would make me happy to see every thief in Powhatan County locked up and a list posted - at least the public would know who these creeps are.  There is no excuse, poor, poor me…if it isn’t yours it just isn’t yours and you are not entitled to take it from someone else.  You are entitled to work hard and be honest.  That is a concept that some can’t understand and I am not tolerant in any way shape or form of stealing.  Where does this mindset come from that it is OK to steal?  Good for the Sheriff’s Department and all of the good work they do.

Wow.  This guy is probably loving you giving him a plea, Dickie.  This is one of his last arrest below.  He actually broke into a state cops home and gave him a slap and took his car.  Nice of you to welcome him to Powhatan.  Here’s the print:
Thomas R. Roberts, 19, of Richmond, was charged with Breaking and Entering and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Robert’s was also charged with grand larceny of an automobile in the City of Richmond. Because the victim assaulted in this incident was a Virginia State Police trooper who lives at the residence, Roberts has also been charged with Felonious Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. Roberts is being held without bail at the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office.
