Do you know someone who has devoted himself or herself to working towards the betterment of Powhatan County?

The Huguenot Ruritan Club is currently seeking nominations for the “Outstanding Powhatan Citizen of the Year Award,” given annually to a resident of the county who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the betterment of his or her community.

“The purpose of the award is to recognize those who are already doing community service work and to encourage those who are not involved already to get involved,” said Huguenot Ruritan’s Jim Cox.

The club is asking all of Powhatan, including civic clubs, churches, and businesses, to submit the names of those they would like to nominate for the award by Feb. 20.

The winner of the award will be honored at an awards dinner in April, and the Ruritan Club will make a $100 donation to the charity of their choice. As in past years, the Bank of Powhatan will also contribute $100 to any charity the award recipient chooses.

Past recipients of the award include Patsy Goodwyn, Adam Sadler, Johns Bailey, Addie Weisiger, Tommy Mann, Ruth Boatwright, Jack Lewis, Winfred Taylor, Susan Ash and Cathy Burns.

Last year’s recipient, Pat Fowler, was honored for her tireless work with the Special Olympics program.
