School bus driver replaced after students’ behavior delays drop-off Published: October 15, 2009 By Roslyn Ryan Powhatan County School Superintendant Dr. Margaret S. Meara has taken action after a late bus drop-off angered a number of county parents. Parents of Flat Rock Elementary School children who ride bus 52 contacted by Meara and Powhatan shortly after the Oct. 1 incident, during which some watched the bus pull out of their neighborhood without dropping off their children. One complaint was that parents were not able to reach school or bus garage personnel to find out what was going on, leading to both confusion and heightened concern as to where the children were being taken. The children were eventually dropped off, though some returned home over an hour later than usual. “I changed the bus driver because of bad feelings on both sides,” wrote Meara. “This way everyone can start fresh.” The schools, she said, are also working to fix a malfunction in the phone lines that prevented parents from being able to contact personnel at the bus garage and at Flat Rock Elementary. A closer look at school transportation in Powhatan What are the procedures in place for dealing with behavioral problems on the bus? What is the policy on drivers and accidents/speeding violations? Are the safety records of drivers available to parents?

Do you all have the facts ‘cause you sure are speaking like you do! Grandma, the article in the newspaper gave more info. The parent calling ‘foul’ wasn’t the parent of the kids who were needing disciplined. You’re telling me you wouldn’t have a problem if lil Johnny didn’t get off the bus until in excess of an hour later with no call and no explanation? There’s more to the story and just maybe the school had a really good reason to replace the bus driver. There’s not enough info. here to blame the school or the parents…or even the bus driver for that matter. Glad ya feel comfortable giving carte blanche authority to the adults in your children’s lives. You must’ve all had nothing but great experiences with those responsible for the care of yours. This speaks volumes as to why EVERY bus needs an operating video camera with microphone. In this day and age, it’s crazy not to. Let’s not waste our time trying to guess who was at fault, but get our school board members to support this safety measure. Grandma of Bon Air

Is it any wonder kids today are the way they are… ?? The parents are too quick to jump in and call ‘foul’ when anyone tries to discipline them… So, what happens… ?? the kids think they can literally get away with murder, because the parents will get them off the hook….. Parents used to back up the teachers or anyone else trying to correct their child, and kids stayed much more in line… It’s the parents who need to be told to ‘back off’ and let the authorities do their job… !! Once again the scool system caves from a little pressure from the parents. Nothing new here in Powhatan…and very sad. My question is who is running the school system? Looks like the parents to me. If you make a few waves the schools will back peddle and do everything they can to make the parents happy. Annoyed Mom of Powhatan

This article is nonsense. I am tired of being lied to by the school system. The one system that you would think that you could trust! Dr. Strangelove is right, the driver did not act inappropriately, she was just doing her job. I’m willing to bet you she was told to take those kids back to school by her boss. But who’s going to take up for her now? No one!!! Because that’s the kind of school system we are dealing with. Or these policies and procedures that Mr. Spencer is talking about with the accidents and the drug testing is also nonsense. In the last two weeks there have been at least 2 to 3 accidents and from what I understand both were cited and only one is getting fired. So how is that fair. And the one that is getting fired has been with the county for numerous years and never had any complaints or any other accidents. They don’t take up for their employees at all, unless it’s one of their favorites. Dr. Strangelove of The War Room

The bus driver “had not acted inappropriately,” and yet she is still replaced? I think the school should have defended its employee, the driver, and told the complaining parents that the driver did the best she could and that the parents needed to be quiet and stop blowing a minor incident out of proportion. This reminds me of the incident regarding the Obama speech. In both instances, the school seems to have caved in to malcontent parents instead of taking a firm stand for what was right.
