Eight School Board advisory committees available for county residents

The Powhatan County School Board is inviting interested residents to join one of its advisory committees for the coming school year 2008/2009.  The committees meet several times each school year and serve to offer suggestions to the School Board on a variety of topics. 

The following committees are available: School Health/Family Life Education, Safe and Drug Free Schools, Alternative Education, Talented and Gifted Education, Special Education, Title I/Remedial Education, Vocational Education and School Building.

For more information or to sign up, please contact Michele Wilson at 598-5700 for an application. Applications must be completed by August 22, 2008.

New textbooks to be adopted

Powhatan County Public Schools will be adopting new textbooks for use to begin this fall in the following areas of Career and Technical Education:  Early Childhood Education, Life Planning/Family Relations, Computer Applications/Keyboarding, Advanced Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies, and Small Engines.  The textbooks for consideration will be on display in the library/media center of Powhatan High School from July 16 through July 30.  The public is welcome to review them during school hours from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.

College news

Amanda Autumn White, a 2004 graduate of Powhatan High School, and Baylee Dawn Smith, a 2006 graduate of Powhatan High School have been named to the spring 2008 dean’s list at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va.  White, a 2008 R-MC graduate with a degree in philosophy and minor in education, is the daughter of Duane and Darla White of Powhatan.

Smith, a religious studies and Greek major, is the daughter of Richard and Melissa Smith of Powhatan.

Amy Gwaltney, a 2007 Powhatan High School graduate has been named to the dean’s list at James Madison University. Gwaltney is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Media Arts and Design.
