Second shooting victim now home Published: July 09, 2008 By Michael Copley The second Powhatan teenager shot during an altercation on June 24 has been released from the hospital. Courtney Jones, 15, was struck once in the back during the June 24 shooting that claimed the life of 18-year-old Tahliek Taliaferro. The wound to Jones’ upper and lower intestines required a 10-day hospital stay, but he is home now, recovering with family. Carolyn Jackson picked her son up from the hospital on Friday, July 4. “We’re doing pretty good,” said Jackson. “He is walking pretty well…he’s still in a lot of pain but he’s getting better.” A pelvic infection developed while Jones was in the hospital and a drain bag had to be inserted. “He’ll have to go back and get the staples taken out and they still have to remove the drain bag,” said Jackson Monday. “He’s healing but he has a long way to go. Courtney’s young, but that’s a lot for a little body to take…with a hole that goes almost all the way through.” The emotional damage inflicted by tragedy is often more difficult to heal than the physical wounds. “This is such a sad thing for everyone and Courtney’s only 15,” said Jackson. “He’s going to have to have some counseling in the future because he just won’t talk about it now.” Community response to Jones’ ordeal was dramatic. “Everyone has been outstanding,” said Jackson. “It made me feel so important that people cared. We’re taking the healing process one step at a time. I’m just blessed to have Courtney.” |

Carolyn: The sun is peeping through the clouds and there will be peace for you and your family soon. I hope you know that the entire community is lifting him and you up in prayer. Prayer changes things…heals your body, mind and spirit. I pray, in Jesus name, that Courtney will make a full recovery and your family will begin healing from the heartbreak of this life changing event. What a blessing from God for you and your son to have the rest of your lives to share together. And it will be a full and meaningful life in spite of this tragedy—I just know it. I am so happy to hear that Courtney is home recovering—surrounded by people who love him!!!! Tabitha Berry of Powhatan

To the Jones Family, I am very sorry for what you are going through. It is a Blessing to see that Courtney is home. I am continuously praying for him, and I know that God will help him through his healing process. Just take it one day at a time and God will work the rest out. I have faith that you will make a full, complete recovery. Again, me & my family’s prayers are with you. I don’t know Courtney personally but my daughter (niesha Berry) speaks highly of him. She sends her love as well. Wanda
