Powhatan residents should be on the lookout for suspicious activity in their neighborhoods, this according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The latest rash of thefts, which authorities say started some time late in 2008, has targeted unlocked cars in the driveways of county subdivisions.

The Sheriff’s Department said at least 16 car owners in the Chestnut Oak, Shadow Creek, Spencer Wood and Maple Grove neighborhoods have been victims in these nighttime strikes.

But Detective Jason Tackett said the thefts are not neighborhood specific.

How you can protect yourself:
• Keep doors to homes and vehicles locked
• Remove all valuables from vehicles
• Report any suspicious activity to the Powhatan Sheriff’s Dept. at 598-5656

Authorities say the thieves are opening the doors of unlocked cars across the county and taking money, ipods, GPS systems, and most troubling to police, firearms.

“It’s bad enough peoples’ valuables are being taken,” said Ann Reynolds of the Sheriff’s Department, “but it’s the guns that scare me. Now we have to worry about more of them out there.”

At last count firearms had been stolen from three residents’ vehicles.

“This is not the old Powhatan that people who grew up here remember,” said Detective Kevin Wolfe.

Investigation into these crimes is hampered by the unlocked car doors. Without forced entry, the Sheriff’s Office says it can take a day or two for people to notice something is missing.

So authorities are asking residents to keep a close eye on the activity in their neighborhoods and immediately notify police of any unusual activity.

“The residents are usually best at spotting what or who is out of place in their neighborhood,” said Tackett.

It is not the old’s days in any city or county these days. Blame not being able to spank your child’s backside like we had ours done.

My family lived here for the past 45 years but we have not faced any threat such as we are facing now a days. Where are our youth going? What they want from society? Why only they want to enjoy and not responsible to the society? Amazing.

Well I am sorry for your loss. The truth is some police departments will see this as negligence on your part and may revoke your LTC or whatever permits you may have and they could take the rest of your cache. If your gun is found to be used in a crime there could be some liability on your part as well. That is according to the little insert that comes with every handgun that you buy in the Communist Commonwealth of Massachusetts. How does a gun get stolen? I have a hard time with this one. I just don’t get it. What Happened?

Its just common sense to lock up your things at night anyways, Chuck is right. But then again Powhatan’s crime rate has dramatically increased in the past few years, and things weren’t always like this.

This is in response to chesterfieldst question. He did not take the gun out every night because it was in his work truck. If he would take it with us anywhere in our personal vehicle he would always take it out. He would many times have to do work in bad areas so he always left the gun in the truck but not where you could see it. When it was stolen they had to dig for it, but unfortunately it was stolen by someone we knew and they knew he had it in the truck.

YES AND YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO PROTECT AND DEFEND YOURSELF AND FAMILY AND PROPERTY, BUT NOW IF SOMEONE THREATENS YOU AND YOU DEFEND YOURSELF YOU GET CHARGED WITH MURDER OR ATEMPTED OR WHATEVER THOSE POLITICANS IN THE COMM ATTYS OFFICE NEED TO BETTER THIER CAREERS. >>

You have a lot to learn about the law. You cannot shoot just because of a threat and I am NOT a cop and I do not know one.

It is not the olds days in any city or county these days. Blame not being able to spank your child’s backside like we had ours done.

It is called no RESPECT any more.

May I ask why you do not take the gun out of the car when you get out? I also have a concealed weapons permit but never leave my gun in the car unless I am in it.

Just a question.

My husband and I have been in this county 30+ years. We grew up here and live on a private road. You use to never have to lock your doors but a gun was stolen out of our truck. My husband is not dumb he carried a handgun for protection and yes he had a permit to carry it. I guess the days of leaving everything unlocked is over. Our gun has never been recovered and yes we now lock our doors at night.
