The man, the myth, the fiddle Published: September 09, 2010 By Roslyn Ryan When it comes to music, Powhatan residents have always embraced a wide variety of styles. We have church-rocking gospel and good-old-fashioned rock. We welcome jazz festivals and international childrens’ choirs. But when trying to distill the style of music that represents the true roots of the county, the answer is clear as a mountain stream: nothing says Powhatan like good-old-fashioned, boot-stomping country music. When it came to finding the quintessential artist to headline the biggest concert event in Powhatan’s history, promoters were thrilled to find out that Daniels was willing to be a part of it. An electric performer with half a century in the spotlight (and 40 studio albums to his credit), Daniels will be among several artists taking the stage for the planned Patriot’s Day celebration on September 11. “We couldn’t have picked a better artist to bring to Powhatan,” said festival organizer Deborah Tokarz, pointing out the artist’s dedication to the US military and his “deep and abiding love for this country.” Event information: Parking: Inclement weather: *** More info on the show: Items not permitted:
It’s expected to draw around 15,000 people, which means at least two things for certain: Plenty of money will be raised for the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, and Tokarz and her small staff of producers won’t be getting much sleep. “There’s a heck of a lot to gain, but, also, a heck of a lot to lose,” she said last Wednesday from Childress’s home, where she and one of her helpers were busy hammering out the details of, among other things, feeding what will amount to a small city of concert-goers, crew members and volunteers. Fortunately, Tokarz said, the people she is working with are seasoned professionals. She couldn’t say enough about the help she has received from local emergency response workers and police, as well as all the local businesses that have pitched in to make her, and her team, feel at home. At the end of the day, said Tokarz, the art of coordinating such a production is something she relishes. |

It’s that time of year to reflect on all that we have by giving “THANKS”... Please remember to extend that sentiment to all military personnel, active or inactive, whether you know them or not. So, whenever you see someone in uniform, go up to them and say “thank you”. Let them know you’ll “never forget”. It means the world to them.

Your security personnel was very polite and helpful with my family. Kudos to you on having them so well organized. I felt safe in such a huge crowd. bw

“back roads of Powhatan” - “Redneck Woodstock” What a narrow-minded, stereotypical comment and completely off base with actual events. Open your mind and experience different things for a change. Give me a Redneck as you call them over an elitetist anyday. Krystal Solzbach of Powhatan

Thank you Deborah for working so tirelessly on this Premier event for Powhatan! Like I previoulsy mentioned on here, the only complaint I had was that they did not allow us to keep our Chex mix and our waters and that can prove difficult for those of us with fixed budgets and young children. That aside, you and your helpers outdid yourselves with this event and our family thanks you for all of the work you did! We would not hesitate to buy tickets in the future for another event like this! Deborah Tokarz of Powhatan

I can’t believe even for one second that anyone would complain about this event! I already had plans that couldn’t be cancelled but I would have been there in a heartbeat otherwise! Thank you to the individuals that allowed Powhatan and surrounding counties on their property for a great cause. Thank you to each and every staff that made it run smoothly. Thank you to the members of the community that did come out to support the cause… Thank you for shutting up if you have anything negative to say; because under no circumstances can everyone be pleased! Powhatan needs events like this; it brings together family and friends and why not have a great cause be supported at the same time. Most events in Chesterfield, Richmond, Innsbrook and Charlottesville are the same price or higher!!! I am not sure what “Patriot In The of West End” is mouthing off about… My husband and I both have a concealed permit and I would NEVER even think about taking to an event of this nature!!! It would have stayed tucked away at home or locked up in my car!!! People like you cause people like me to have grief… because guns have their time and place… and it isn’t at a local county family event!!! bw

I know many, including myself, who were scared away by the 12,000-15,000 projected attendance figure, rumor or not, which came out. Knowing the narrow roads at the location and that kind of crowd! I spoke with someone who worked the event and they did say for a new event parking, etc. went very well. And don’t forget, it was Nascar weekend also and those tickets were purchased long ago. Didnt see it either of powhatan

Only negative thing I can think of is that they took my Chex-Mix and my sunflower seeds at the gate. I was equally disappointed that they took our family’s water bottles. Even local venues allow for two water bottles per person. Other than that, this was a premier day for Powhatan and all of the talent was phenomenal. Submit Your Comments Below |
