The man, the myth, the fiddle Published: September 09, 2010 By Roslyn Ryan When it comes to music, Powhatan residents have always embraced a wide variety of styles. We have church-rocking gospel and good-old-fashioned rock. We welcome jazz festivals and international childrens’ choirs. But when trying to distill the style of music that represents the true roots of the county, the answer is clear as a mountain stream: nothing says Powhatan like good-old-fashioned, boot-stomping country music. When it came to finding the quintessential artist to headline the biggest concert event in Powhatan’s history, promoters were thrilled to find out that Daniels was willing to be a part of it. An electric performer with half a century in the spotlight (and 40 studio albums to his credit), Daniels will be among several artists taking the stage for the planned Patriot’s Day celebration on September 11. “We couldn’t have picked a better artist to bring to Powhatan,” said festival organizer Deborah Tokarz, pointing out the artist’s dedication to the US military and his “deep and abiding love for this country.” Event information: Parking: Inclement weather: *** More info on the show: Items not permitted:
It’s expected to draw around 15,000 people, which means at least two things for certain: Plenty of money will be raised for the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, and Tokarz and her small staff of producers won’t be getting much sleep. “There’s a heck of a lot to gain, but, also, a heck of a lot to lose,” she said last Wednesday from Childress’s home, where she and one of her helpers were busy hammering out the details of, among other things, feeding what will amount to a small city of concert-goers, crew members and volunteers. Fortunately, Tokarz said, the people she is working with are seasoned professionals. She couldn’t say enough about the help she has received from local emergency response workers and police, as well as all the local businesses that have pitched in to make her, and her team, feel at home. At the end of the day, said Tokarz, the art of coordinating such a production is something she relishes. |

What kind of drugs is Patriot in the West End taking? I keep a US Constitution on my kitchen table and I can see no direct conflict in banning weapons on private property by the owner of that property. Jay of Bon Air

I do not doubt the patriotism or the “deep and abiding love for this country” of Mr. Childress or Charlie Daniels. This envent is being held on private property and Mr. Childress and Co. may set any rules they so choose; but banning weapons (i.e. handguns)is in direct conflict with the Constitution of the United States. A ban of this type only serves to disarm the honest citizen who has a desire to have a means to defend self and family. Rest assured that to any person intent on causing harm and mayhem at any given event will pay no attention to these rules (ref. VA Tech date April 16).
